Dexter - Season 7 - Episode 3 - Recap Video - Buck the System

Here's the recap of Dexter Season 7 Episode 3: "Buck the System" on SHOWTIME.

In a harrowing new episode of Dexter, Deb might finally be starting to see things from Dexter’s point of view. Plus, a pretty surprising (and sudden) death of a supporting character and some classic dark humor.

Waiting in line to mail something that will take care of that pesky Louis problem, Dexter is clearly tightly wound as he imagines slitting the throat of the woman behind the counter. That’s one way to make sure your mail gets delivered on time! In a meeting with Deb and the rest of Miami Metro, Dex again imagines wreaking havoc upon a bystander, and this time it’s a pen through Masuka’s neck. It’s all imagined, up until Dexter is trying to take a cotton swab of a creepy molester-looking man in an interrogation room. He gets so frustrated that he knocks the man to the ground and starts strangling him, something that Deb doesn’t like one bit. After pulling him out of the interrogation room, Dex tells Deb that he really needs her to back off “or else something bad is gonna happen.” Surprisingly, she actually agrees to give him some space.

Merely minutes after being granted a bit of leeway from Deb, Dex starts researching paroled assaulter Ray Speltzer, someone he suspects is likely to kill again. Dex starts going to the gym that Speltzer frequents, an easy way to spy on the creep without making Deb suspicious. Quinn continues talking to Nadia, the stripper he met last episode, and they plan a date. Back at the strip club, Nadia tells the manager and Isaak what she has learned about a bracelet that the dead stripper was wearing, and Isaak very creepily urges Nadia to continue getting closer to Quinn. As soon as Nadia leaves, Isaak tells George that there must be a way they can pinpoint the location of the bracelet, as it had a GPS tracking system installed inside of it. Looks like Dexter might find himself in a bit of trouble sooner rather than later.

At Miami Metro, the package Dexter mailed earlier arrives - right at the desk of Masuka. When he opens it, he finds the Ice Truck Killer arm that was missing as well as a letter obviously written by Dexter urging Louis to refund their money. Infuriated, Masuka fires Louis on the spot in an awesome scene where Dexter finally shows him who is really in charge. But wait, that’s not all! Dexter also sent an anonymous disc to Jamie of Louis getting a blowjob from a stripper which he had found on Louis’ computer last episode. Oops. Jamie storms out on him, leaving Louis alone and in need of a serious life re-thinking.

Randall’s mom drops off some stuff to Deb that she has kept for several years in the hopes that some of the families affected will finally have some peace, though it appears they will need to talk to Hannah (Randall’s ex-girlfriend) if they want to make sense of anything. Dex tells Deb he won’t be home because he’ll be at the gym just so she can follow him to the bar where he continues to track Speltzer. Dex tells her that he thinks Speltzer will kill again, mostly due to his newfound baldness which is a pattern each time he kills and a likely ritual. Unconvinced that Dexter needs to kill the man, Deb refuses to listen until Dex has some solid evidence proving his guilt.

Stalking Speltzer at his cemetery job, Dex notices some weird activity happening near an old mausoleum; before he can explore, Deb calls him into her office and informs him that he needs to help Angel locate Hannah and take a DNA sample from her. On the way there, Angel makes a pit stop at the scummy strip club, where he proceeds to call George out on his douche-iness (they know that after speaking to the cops, Tony was killed as an example). Dex has his first odd conversation with Isaak, even though it’s clear that neither of them knows just how dangerous the other is. They don’t even exchange names, it’s just some eerie small talk. Once Dex & Angel locate Hannah, she doesn’t seem to want to cooperate and won’t even look at some photos that Angel brought along. After seeing a warrant for her DNA though, Hannah is more than willing to let Dex swab her (wow that sounds dirty.)

After speaking with Dexter about the mausoleum, Deb tries her hardest to get a warrant to search it and do things the proper legal way, but LaGuerta tells her that she doesn’t have enough to obtain a warrant. At least LaGuerta advises her to have someone follow Speltzer around a bit: better than nothing.

After tracking the GPS on the bracelet all the way to the marina, Isaak is more than convinced that someone had him killed and dropped his body into the water. In an obvious case of wrong place, wrong time, Isaak and his buddies find Louis tinkering with Dexter’s boat (“Kiss my ass you ginger freak!”) and question him. All he tells them is that Dexter Morgan is a douche, and then Isaak promptly shoots him in the head. A better way to go than a drill to the eye, I suppose, but pretty surprising nonetheless. Something tells me that Louis’ storyline isn’t over quite yet, as there seemed to be a bit more stirring there and the book wasn’t fully closed on him yet.

Nadia tells Quinn she’s terrified of her employers and what they have asked her to do, but he thinks they could come to an agreement where he can share just enough information to make them happy. Will this guy ever learn? Deb gets a call from the person trailing Speltzer, who has pretty much settled for the night. She tells the guy he can go home, but she still isn’t convinced that the man won’t try to kill again. Unable to get ahold of Dexter (it’s hard to get service in a mausoleum, apparently), Deb leaves him a message and says she’s gonna at least stop by the Speltzer’s place to check things out. Meanwhile, Dex finds all the proof he needs as one of the victim’s earrings is sitting almost shrine-like inside the mausoleum. As soon as he’s out, Dex gets Deb’s message and hurries off to the house…

At the same time, Deb arrives and investigates the house, and after hearing the scream of the latest female victim of Speltzer’s, she breaks the door in. Speltzer pulls Deb into a cranny and is about to make a final strike on her when Dex hits him over the head. The two of them find the dead body of the killer’s newest victim, but Speltzer manages to get away when they have their backs turned. The house wasn’t even Speltzer’s; it was a foreclosure. The earring was also gone from the mausoleum when it was searched.

The very next day, Deb reveals to Dexter that she thinks he should move back into his own place, and that, as much as she hates it, what he does might just be “a necessary evil.” Dexter might finally be free of Debra’s supervision, but what does this mean for him going forward, especially since Deb says “nothing will ever be the same again” between the two of them. What did you think of this week’s episode? I’m anxious to see what all of this is building towards, and I found it very interesting this week how Debra was able to get into Dexter’s mindframe a little bit. Is he going to admit to Deb that he is the Bay Harbor Butcher, or is that basically an unspoken thing by now? The new episode of Dexter is next Sunday at 9:00 PM on Showtime.
