Dexter - Season 7 Episode 2 - Recap - Sunshine and Frosty Swirl
Here's the recap of Dexter Season 7 Episode 2: "Sunshine and Frosty Swirl" on SHOWTIME.
On this week's new episode of Dexter, Deb is convinced that the key to helping her brother is to give him her own personal form of rehab and ban him from making any more kills. While less nail-biting action occurs in the second episode, any fan of the show will find much to love in the second episode this season.
Starting from right where last episode ended, Deb runs from Dexter's apartment into the street, pretty much hyperventilating. She throws a lot of ideas around, including things like "are you the Bay Harbor Butcher?"… obviously not a good question for Dex. He shares with Deb that their own father showed him the ropes, and for once she seems to think their dad was totally wrong. In not helping Dexter suppress his "Dark Passenger", Harry single-handedly created a serial killer. When she says she can't just turn her back, Dex asks her "what are you gonna do?" and she proceeds to punch him in the face, storming out of his apartment. Dexter realizes that the hand from the Ice Truck Killer case is on his table, and checks out the evidence file at work. Masuka tells him about the girl he caught auctioning off the hand online, and mentions that Louis was unable to find out who the item actually sold to.

At a conference meeting, Deb reveals that serial killer Wayne Randall wants to lead investigators to bodies of women he killed, and while Dexter jumps at the idea of some time away, she ultimately has Masuka fill in for the job of assisting with the bodies. Deb takes Dexter out on the bay; she wants to be his rehab, helping his killing addiction by watching him 24/7. It's a good idea, considering that Dexter has never really had much supervision after Harry died.
Quinn and Angel take over the strip club again for interrogation, sure that they are hiding something. Quinn flirts it up with a blonde chick, managing to squeeze some information out of her. She tells Quinn that the girl who was killed was dating a guy named Tony, a bouncer who hasn't showed up for work in days. He also gives the stripper his number and tells her to call if anything else pops into her head.
Deb takes the couch in her house while she makes Dexter take the bed so that she has a closer vicinity to the door. Over spagetti, Dexter reveals the feeling that washes over him when he has to kill; blood trickles down behind his eyelids until it becomes a flood, and fills all his empty spaces till it turns black and compresses his head, then "the only way to relieve the pressure is to open the floodgates and let it spill out." Later in the night, Dexter is trying to figure out a way into Louis' penthouse but Deb unceremoniously interrupts. This is kind of a fun dynamic and one that I can't see wearing thin by the season's end.
Quinn and Angel manage to interrogate Tony till he admits knowing the stripper girl was with Victor the night she died. The very Victor that indeed killer Mike and in turn, Dexter himself killed last episode. Masuka complains to Dex that dealing with this Randall case is the equivalent of waiting around to deflower "a born-again Christian", which leads Dex asking his sister if he can take over for a bit. Reluctantly she lets him go, initially wanting to drive him around but becoming sidetracked due to the breakthrough with the stripper case.
When Dex arrives at the site, it seems as though Randall's memory is a bit fuzzy as he's leading them nowhere. Lots of dug-up holes and nothing to show for it. Dexter asks the killer himself why he had a change of heart, and he admits that the good part of him was always there, just buried under a lot of crap. Dexter utilizes the one time he has to get into Louis' place, unimpressed by his toys. Dex quickly discovers that it was Louis who cancelled his credit cards last episode, and also does some fishing around on his laptop. Louis definitely has it in for Dex as he reveals in an almost-cute-but-kind-of-creepy video blog. Louis comes home moments later, and Dexter presses him up against a wall, threatening him if he doesn't leave. Dex also seems baffled that Louis has it in for him solely because he refused to help with Louis' killer-themed game he created. It seems like something more if definitely going on with Louis, but only time will tell. Dex warns Louis to quit his job and stop seeing Jamie, which he shakily agrees to. Deb freaks out on Dexter's little disappearing act when he arrives back at the Randall FBI scene, but doesn't seem to suspect a thing.
Quinn and Angel come to the strip club yet again, revealing they know more information but the manager George still won't share any details about Victor. George goes back into his office only to face a cold interrogation from Isaak about the whereabouts of Victor and if he is the one who spoke to the police… It's weird how unintimidating Isaak seems but you can tell there is something more than what's shown on the surface.
LaGuerta opens the FBI evidence she requested be sent to her, which includes all of the slides from the Bay Harbor Butcher case. She holds up the slide she found to one of the slides from Dexter's original collection. This bitch is snooping too hardcore and something tells me she's going to finally get hers later this season. After all, she was killed in the first book that the series is based on… Dexter and Deb stop to visit Harrison and he is clearly surprised to see Louis there, who apparently didn't find him intimidating in the slightest.
Quinn picks up the stripper he gave his number to, and when he drops her off it seems like she might be interested in some sex or something but instead she asks if he can pay off her car repairs. Not exactly what I was expecting from her, but the real question here is whether or not Quinn will actually do it considering all the off choices he's made in the past few seasons.
Dexter injects something into Deb's steak at dinner so he can easily slip out and deal with his problem with Louis, which involves sticking a needle in his neck. This time, Dexter has Louis in the back of his vehicle and calls Deb, sounding desperate. She shows up, quite woozy, and it's hard to tell how much of what follows next is just Dexter pretending for her sake so she'll think he's getting better. He obviously has some sort of control, enough to call her anyway, but he never tells her about Louis. After she leaves, he drops Louis' unconscious body onto a chair in the field nearby. Yay, someone Dexter hasn't killed! I'm fondly reminded of when he gave Rita's husband what was coming to him by planting syringes in his apartment. Oh, the good times.
Isaak shows up and freaks out Tony in a garage. He's a little menacing, and when it seems like he's going to put Tony down easy, he sticks a screwdriver through the guy's eye and leaves the body on the ground. Damn, that was unexpected. Back at the Randall FBI site, Dexter is chatting with Randall one final time when Randall throws himself in front of a truck; he never really had a change of heart, he just wanted some final days of sunshine before he kicked the bucket. With that somber ending, you're left wondering if Dexter can really change and will be able to control his Dark Passenger or if it will ultimately lead to his downfall.
What did you think of this week's Dexter? Any theories on what LaGuerta is going to do with those slides, or how Louis is really connected to Dexter? I'm loving this season so far, and even two episode in, it has a real sense of tension and anticipation that was a bit lacking last season. I love this show!
