Devastating Verdict
Martha Stewart was convicted on all counts today. What a sad day for a woman I was once idolized as my domestic goddess (I shifted to Nigella Lawson a couple of years ago). It's interesting that Martha has been charged and convicted with lying. Businessmen and women lie all the time and Martha is just one of the many. Perhaps she has to live up to a higher standard for being looked up to by many. She however blatantly lied to the goverment as shown by the evidence of the prosecution. The odd part is she wasn't charged with insider trading -- she was charged with lying and obstruction, basically covering-up. She will get fined a whole lot of money and most likely a prison sentence for what was essentially a $50,000 savings on the stock she sold. Will this make her humble? Maybe not.
Though I have no qualms about the verdict (the case had guilty written all over it), I'm rather upset that the real corporate scandal in America, Enron, has almost been lost in the radar. Although, finally, after two years, some indictments have been made, Kenneth Lay, George W. Bush's "Kenny Boy" is still out there roaming free. I'm afraid the government might stop at former CEO Jeff Skilling, but they really have to go after Lay. Enron couldn't have just gone bad in the two years that Skilling was on the helm, it was bad from the very beginning. And since I have personal issues with this company that have affected me deeply, I want convictions to happen.
I have also taken a brief interest in the SCO vs. IBM lawsuit. This is such a dark comedy involving IBM, Microsoft, Novell, Linux, Unix and the MyDoom virus. SCO (which used to be Caldera) are such idiots. It gets a little complex every day, with SCO now suing some Linux-using companies, but it's written in the stars: at the end of it all, SCO will disappear from the face of the earth. Happy reading...
