David Nail Reveals Life-Long Struggle With Depression
David Nail may have recently scored a #1 with 'Whatever She's Got', with a great 2014 ahead that includes a brand new album, I'm A Fire (due March 4) - but he explains that that's not the key to making him happy.
In an interview, he explained that he has struggled with depression for much of his life. "To be honest and blunt as I can possibly be, I’ve been depressed my entire life and just dealt with so many insecurities and it kind of came to a head a couple years ago when ‘Let It Rain’ was #1 and I had all these good things going on and I just wasn’t happy", he admits. "And to be perfectly honest with you, I just bottomed out." He says that he is now in a better place in his life, but it didn't come easy. "I’ve been going to counseling for a couple of years now and take a lot of really expensive medicines and just made a lot of changes in my personal life", he says. "I’ve learned not to take life so serious and to kind of enjoy it and had a lot of help in doing that."
David also notes that he originally thought success would make him happy, and tried to deal with the depression on his own, but it didn't go well. "It was so hard for me just to get to zero, much less get to a ten and have a great day", he says of waking up each day in an emotional black hole. "It seemed like it was a constant grind to find something to latch onto."
Luckily, things finally seem to be looking up for the singer. "I have a lot more good days than bad days now, and there’s a lot of people responsible for that." I'm glad he's speaking out about his depression, and hopefully it will encourage others to do so, as well as helping fans who are suffering with the same issues. He's very brave and I have a lot of respect for him for taking this career path despite his personal troubles.
Here's to hoping he can continue to work through his problems and be much happier.
