Darren Aronofsky Adapting Margaret Atwood's 'MaddAddam' for HBO

Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky is getting into television with an adaptation of a popular, futuristic book series.

Aronofsky is reportedly adapting Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam book trilogy for HBO. Based on Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003), Year Of The Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013), the project is being developed as a possible directing vehicle for Aronofsky, who is already on-board as an executive producer. MaddAddam is the first series to come out of the lucrative three-year, first-look deal Aronofsky and his Protozoa Pictures company signed with HBO back in January.

Atwood’s MaddAddam books are set in the mid-21st century in a world "where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is perversely ubiquitous." The main plot of the books focuses on "the events before and after a Waterless Flood that wipes out almost all of the world’s population and follows an extensive cast of characters, including those responsible for the apocalypse and those struggling to survive it."

That sounds...kind of awesome, actually. HBO has been doing a hell of a job buying up intriguing literary properties for adaptation. Not just Game of Thrones (based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series), or True Blood (based on Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels), but also the upcoming Tom Perrotta adaptation, The Leftovers (which looks AMAZING). In short, I have complete faith in HBO's ability to make this into something special. And given Aronofsky's recent success with Noah, he seems like the perfect guy to helm a project centered on a flood-based apocalyptic disaster, after all.
