Damn Yankees!

I watched the "Damn Yankees" revival tonight with richie and his sister Kim and Ken. (It was a fitting end to a day of panicking over a cellphone and a haircut uptown).

I've never seen any iteration of this musical so I was a happy to see it. I thought Sean Hayes was funny -- he had some memorable moments for me, even if richie said it was out of character. Cheyenne Jackson was hot. Unfortunately, Jane Krokawski as Lola, bombed. I kept thinking: this is such an awesome role, I wish somebody else was doing it. "Whatever Lola Wants" was supposed to be a showstopper, but Jane tried and failed.

I thought the real star however was Bob Fosse and his choreography. Baseball players dancing is really cute. However, even that was mangled by the company (Jane specially) for the most part.

How to get this into Broadway: Re-cast Lola, and hire an ensemble who can dance Bob Fosse choreography competently.

You've gotta have heart
All you really need is heart
When the odds are sayin' you'll never win
That's when the grin should start!
