Daft Punk Cosplay at Special Edition: NYC 2014 (VIDEO)
Special Edition: NYC kicked off this weekend at Javits Center in New York City.
The event is organized by the creators of New York Comic Con.
At first this seemed to me like a super scaled down version of NYCC, but after doing the rounds, this is actually an awesome event. It's designed for comic book fans, period. Javits Center North where it's currently running has two of the most important things fans look for: stacks and stacks of comic back issues and rows and rows of comic book creators and artists. It is really a great way to meet the creators without the zoo-like environment of Comic Con.
There's no sea of bodies everywhere and you feel like you could interact with anyone actually. For example, I was able to take pictures of the cosplayers normally, without feeling overwhelmed like I do every single year at NYCC. It just seemed more casual and laid back, which is great. (There was a Daft Punk cosplayer who had 'Get Lucky' playing from his backpack which was really cool.)
The one issue I saw (and not really an issue, but something to work on) was the discrepancy between the "indie" artists and the well known ones that work for DC Comics and Marvel.
Francis Manapul, the writer and artist of Detective Comics, had a huge line at his table. The same for Gail Simone (Batgirl) and Tony S. Daniel (Superman/Wonder Woman). Some of the indie artists meanwhile were routinely ignored at the Artist Alley. I guess I wasn't prepared, and I honestly had no idea who those people were -- but unlike in NYCC, I actually really wanted to know these artists. So maybe I will do a bit of researching the next time, but perhaps a better "user's guide" from the organizers could help boost the profiles of the independents. It felt like they had to promote themselves from their table far greater than the DC and Marvel guys.
Special Edition: NYC runs through Sunday.
