The CW Titles 'Supernatural' Spinoff, Orders 'iZombie' Adaptation

The CW is going full speed ahead on supernatural weirdness for its upcoming slate of potential 2014-2015 programs.

iZombie, based on the DC Comics property with the same name, has received a pilot order from the network. The original source material isn't that well-known, but the official synopsis is a real doozy:

“A med student-turned-zombie takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity, but with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.”

Not since Shaun of the Dead has a zombie property managed to roll so many different genres into one! It's hard to imagine that iZombie won't get picked up to series, if only because of the pedigree behind the show, as Veronica Mars showrunners Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero are on-board as executive producers.

Meanwhile, the network has also settled on a title to the upcoming spinoff of one of its most successful shows, Supernatural. The spinoff is currently being developed under the working title, Supernatural: Tribes. Not much is known about the series specifically, except that the show will center on the conflict between the hunter and monster cultures in Chicago. A backdoor pilot for the spin-off will air as an episode of Supernatural this spring, and will feature a host of new characters. The "backdoor pilot" approach worked out pretty well for The Originals this season, so it should be interesting to see if The CW can strike oil twice.
