Craig Wayne Boyd sings 'The Old Rugged Cross' (VIDEO)
Craig Wayne Boyd sang 'The Old Rugged Cross' on The Voice Season 7 Semi-Finals on Monday, December 8, 2014 for Team Blake Shelton.
Craig is singing "The Old Rugged Cross," a popular hymn that's a hundred years old. So yeah, not exactly current, but it's been covered by plenty of popular artists like Vince Gill, Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard. So Craig can now add his name to the list of people who've done the song in recent years. And I'd argue he delivers one of the best versions of it in all of popular music. This has the added bonus of playing right into his fanbase, as this song has Heartland America written all over it. Naturally, it helps that the vocal is absolutely killer. Craig was smart in picking this song, and really gave it all he had, as evidenced by that awesome closing line. He could really win this thing.
Pharrell: "I get it, man. To God be the Glory." He then asks Pharrell what it means to be at the top of his game, and to surrender it all to God. Craig says it's mind-blowing, and a blessing. Gwen asks if this is the first time Craig has played with a full orchestra, and he admits that it is. She says he looks like he's done it 100 times, and adds that his voice is incredible. Adam says this was a different side of Craig, and showed his brilliant range. "It was really special," Adam notes. Blake, meanwhile, is happy for Craig, and wishes America could see their rehearsals, particularly when Blake told him he could have an orchestra. Blake declares this to be one of the most passionate, emotional performances he's ever heard, and I really can't blame him for gushing. At all.
