Country singer Randy Travis is in critical condition at a Texas hospital, suffering from "complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy," according to a rep for the prolific artist.

Travis was reportedly admitted Sunday, July 7, and doctors quickly discovered the viral infection, which attacks and weakens the heart muscles.

Doctors acted fast, putting Travis under the knife to combat the damage of the infection.

"We have been told he has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him because my husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family," Teresa Traywick, Randy's sister-in-law, tells People.

"Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps," Traywick continues. "My prayers are with them. That's all I can say right now."

All upcoming shows on the singer's schedule have been canceled. Prior to his hospitalization, Travis had returned to touring following a very public stint in rehab as a result of several alcohol-related arrests in the past year, including an incident in which the Grammy winner was caught driving under the influence while naked. When Texas police attempted to arrest him, Travis threatened to shoot the arresting officers.

Travis would go on to face trouble with the law, such as an assault citation following a confrontation between his girlfriend and her estranged husband in August 2012, mere days after Travis once again made headlines after his truck was discovered wrecked and abandoned in a Texas field.

However, these incidents have done little to harm his standing in the country music community, much less the celebrity community at large. Stars are already tweeting their support for the country music legend.

"Sending a get well message out to my buddy @randytravis tonight. Thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery," tweeted singer Tracy Lawrence.

Lance Armstrong also added his well-wishes: "Thoughts go out to @randytravis. Heal up soon my man! One of country music's greatest voices ever."

As of now, Travis's condition remains listed as critical.
