For the first time, the multiplatinum, Grammy-winning Coldplay will compose an original song exclusively for a motion picture soundtrack, in this case the hotly-anticipated sequel to The Hunger Games, the upcoming Catching Fire.
Lionsgate and Republic Records have revealed that the UK rockers are the first act confirmed for the soundtrack. Their contribution to the soundtrack, a song titled "Atlas," will be released on Aug. 26.
"I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film," said director Francis Lawrence, who took over the director's chair from Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross. "Their unwavering passion an excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can't wait to share this music with audiences around the world."
Additional artists for the soundtrack are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The soundtrack album for the first film was a huge success, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 thanks to high-profile contributions from acts such as Maroon 5, Miranda Lambert's Pistol Annies, Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Kid Cudi, Arcade Fire, Neko Case and more.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will hit theaters on Nov. 22, 2013, though a release date for the soundtrack has yet to be announced.
