Christopher Abbott leaves 'Girls'

Well, it looks like Marnie will have to find someone new to make "little brown babies" with in the third season of HBO's Girls.

Christopher Abbott, who plays Allison Williams’ boyfriend Charlie on the hit HBO series, has abruptly left after reportedly butting heads with series creator Lena Dunham.

Sources close to the situation say that Abbott and creator Dunham clashed on the direction of Abbott's character in the upcoming third season. This comes not long after the airing of the second season finale, in which Charlie finally reunites with Williams' Marnie.

“They’ve just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena,” a source said. “He didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map.”

Abbott’s rep confirmed news of the actor's his departure from the series: “[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”

Makes you wonder exactly what set him off. It's all conjecture on my end, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was learning that he'd likely just be cycling through his season one character arc all over again: becoming needy (again), having Marnie decide she doesn't want to be with him (again), and Charlie becoming the show's go-to sad-sack (again). While I'll miss Charlie, his departure introduces an interesting wrench into the writing of season three. Presumably, Allison Williams doesn't have a storyline now.

Given my love-hate relationship with Marnie, I'm not exactly sure if that's a bad thing or not.
