Christian Bale Might Be Playing Steve Jobs for Aaron Sorkin/David Fincher

The film has been in development since half past forever, but we're finally starting to get some movement on the hotly-anticipated Steve Jobs biopic from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher. And this time, it's cast-related!

According to insiders, Oscar winner Christian Bale is rumored to be Fincher's top choice for the role of Steve Jobs. Reportedly, when Fincher met with Sony's Amy Pascal to negotiate his terms for directing the film, he apparently told her he'd only direct if Bale played Jobs. Although Fincher and Pascal had a notoriously tense working relationship during The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Sony exec believes in Fincher and will likely do what she can to satisfy his demands.

Of course, if anyone were going to make this happen, it would be Pascal, who has a positive working relationship with Bale after their time on American Hustle. Bale has not been formally approached to play Jobs just yet, since the actor is on sabbatical from the business in order to spend more time with his family after wrapping his role as Moses in Ridley Scott's Exodus. But the project is continuing to move forward regardless, as Sorkin is hard at work on the script, which is based on Walter Isaacson's bestselling authorized biography. The film will feature an ambitious narrative that would offer a unique showcase for Bale's tremendous skills, should he accept the role: the movie will basically consist of three long scenes centered around three separate, iconic Apple product launches -- the Mac, NeXT, and the iPod.

In short, this movie basically needs an actor like Bale if the daunting narrative Sorkin has laid out is going to work at all. It's a big risk, and more akin to a play than a movie, but it could be a summit role for Bale if he accepts. Might even win him Oscar #2.
