China Wins Team Gold - Men's Gymnastics Team Final - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results
The Men's Gymnastics Team final was plagued by injuries, controversy and mistakes right from the start. After being nearly counted out due to a last minute injury to one of their stars, the Chinese team managed to pull out the victory at the London 2012 Olympics, however a historic medal victory by the home team was marred by judging controversy. Read on for all the medal results and reaction the the day's events.
In spite of the fact that the gold medal was all but locked up by the Chinese before the final rotation even started, the atmosphere was electric at the Men's Gymnastics final thanks to Great Britain's battle to win their first team medal in men's gymnastics in 100 years. The crowd went wild as it appeared the home team had won the silver medal, however final celebrations had to be delayed as Japan protested the score of their final athlete.
After an excruciating delay, the judges accepted Japan's protest and the adjustment to the score moved Japan from fourth to silver medal position, knocking Great Britain down to bronze medal position and knocking Ukraine out of the medals all together.
The U.S. team, which was expected to contend for a medal got off to a rocky start and were never able to recover. Plagued by falls and major mistakes on almost every apparatus, the team finished a disappointing fifth.
All in all a rather disappointing final. Not only did the U.S. team fall apart, but the story of the night was tarnished by the judging error and resulting inquiry. Now instead of celebrating a historic bronze medal victory, all the talk will be about the inquiry that knocked them down from silver to bronze. Hopefully things will go more smoothly in the individual competition.
Results:
Gold: China
Silver: Japan
Bronze: Great Britain
Congratulations to all the medalists!
