The network is apparently so confident about the Steven Spielberg produced drama set to debut in the Summer that they skipped the pilot process all together.

CBS has issued a straight-to-series order for a serialized sci-fi-esque drama set to debut in the summer.

In a bid to strike Under the Dome-style gold once more, the Eye Network has skipped the pilot process and ordered 13 episodes of Extant, a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family after a year in outer space.

According to the network’s official announcement on Wednesday, the protagonist’s experiences “lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.”

The series will be produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and CBS Television Studios, which also produce the wildly popular Dome.

Extant is scheduled to bow in summer 2014, coinciding with Dome‘s recently ordered second season.

What do you guys think about this one? Does it sound interesting enough to get you curious or will it be another failed 1 season drama series?
