CBS launches $6 a month streaming subscriptions

CBS announced today that it will offer Web streaming online for most of its shows (except sports) for $6 a month.

The service will include live TV viewing (similar to Aereo which the company successfully sued) and is available in select cities now at CBS All Access.

Live TV is available in the following markets:

Baltimore, MD (WJZ), Boston, MA (Manchester, NH) (WBZ), Chicago, IL (WBBM), Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX (KTVT), Denver, CO (KCNC), Detroit, MI (WWJ), Los Angeles, CA (KCBS), Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, FL (WFOR), Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN (WCCO), New York, NY (WCBS), Philadelphia, PA (KYW), Pittsburgh, PA (KDKA), Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, CA (KOVR) and San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA (KPIX)

Sports programs like the NFL are not included as CBS does not have the rights to stream those.

Here is the list of features of CBS All Access:

  • Most Recent Episodes on Desktop
  • Most Recent Episodes on Mobile App
  • Classic Show Library (Ad Free)
  • Live TV (select markets)
  • Earlier Episodes of Current Season Shows
  • Prior Seasons of Current Shows
  • Fewer Ads Per Episode on Desktop and Mobile

CBS All Access is only available in the United States. This includes Hawaii, Alaska and offshore U.S. territories and possessions, such as Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.

Why would anyone pay $6 a month to CBS if their programs are available for free on TV? Perhaps you don't have a TV anymore, that's one.
