The Carrie Diaries - Recap: Just Buy Your Own Coat

The Carrie Diaries continued Season 2 tonight with an episode that emphasized the need for safety and comfort in life and sex. Also, invest in your own coat. That's a no-brainer.

Episode 6 of Season 2 of The Carrie Diaries, “The Safety Dance,” certainly unraveled Adam Weaver (Chris Wood) in a snap. As it turned out, Weaver's coat was woven too uncomfortably for Carrie (Annasophia Robb), literally. As Carrie prepped her first essay on sex, she was yet again forced to choose between her feelings for Weaver and Sebastian (Austin Butler), who’d left his signature jacket behind in the bowels of Bradshaw’s closet for safekeeping. Meanwhile, Mouse (Ellen Wong) debated swallowing her pride and applying to *cringe* a safety school, while Maggie (Katie Findlay) dealt with an actual issue growing inside of her stomach. With their anniversary approaching, Larissa (Freema Agyeman) enlisted the help of an unlikely ally, Samantha (Lindsey Gort), in pleasing her man, Harlan (Scott Cohen). Finally, a move to Alphabet City found Walt (Brenan Dooling) as the victim of a brutal mugging… at the hands of Walt. Here is the Recap and Review of Episode 6 of Season 2 of The Carrie Diaries, “The Safety Dance”!

Things seemed to be looking up for Carrie and Weaver, as Bradshaw spruced up her closet for fall and considered donating Sebastian’s musty old jacket. No wonder Sebastian has seemed so lost during Season 2! Give The Kydd back his coat, Carrie. It's his life force! Meanwhile, Carrie’s first big assignment at the New School was a blank slate, and Bradshaw was, in turn, drawing a blank. Weaver attempted to help Carrie work through the process of her first true case of writer’s block, helping her to revel in the self-doubt of it all. Apparently, a life of torture and discomfort is in store for future writer Carrie Bradshaw. Carrie, once you can buy booze, life as a writer is a snap! Trust me! Weaver eventually suggested that Bradshaw search for something that she truly feared to write about, as fear usually brings about the juiciest stories.

Thankfully, Carrie has sexual aficionado Mouse to help her sift through her options. Even West (RJ Brown) had met with a guidance counselor in order to set up a list of interesting safety schools. Disgusted, Mouse refused, much to everybody else’s complete confusion. That’s about it for Mouse’s story at this point, but now, back to Bradshaw. Walking through the aisles of the pharmacy, Carrie couldn’t even bring herself to look at the vast array of condoms on display. Mouse, on the other hand, was right at home! When did this happen? What do I care? I like this side of Mouse. Even uttering the words “birth control” at the pharmacy counter was too much for Bradshaw to bear. Sideswiped by a run-in with Maggie, Carrie took her mind off of scary sex stuff for a moment to plan a future “talk” with her old bestie. Well, that was easy enough and only slightly awkward. More importantly, Carrie found the topic of her first piece… sex!

Maggie had told a tiny white lie regarding her trip to the pharmacy after running in to Carrie and Mouse. After a short talk with Sebastian in the high school hallway regarding how their impossibly different lives have led them to the same empty place, Mags puked. Literally, the girl ran to a nearby garbage can and threw her guts up. Luckily, she managed to ditch Sebastian in time to hurl and head off to the bathroom to take a pregnancy test aka “use toothpaste.” What a brilliant twist, Carrie Diaries! Mags is pregnant, everybody, and with only one culprit on the list of Maggie’s cop car sexcapades, it was looking like that awful Simon (Josh Salatin) had fathered the baby. Maggie, in all her naivety, met her former fling to discuss their options. Needless to say, Simon was jumping at the opportunity to ditch his fiancé for his boss’ pregnant daughter, and he certainly couldn’t fork over enough dough for an abortion. Just like that, huh? Poor Mags had nowhere to turn to.

Carrie headed to the sexperts for tidbits of information on what having an exciting sex life in her future meant. Larissa, not one to let Samantha visit her breathing space in any case let alone with plastic heels on, put up with her rival in order to help out Carrie. The two rattled off a list of sexual positions, competing while informing their protégé regarding the wondrous world of sex. Afterwards, Larissa made sure to spruce up Samantha’s shoe game with a little help from the fashion closet at Interview. Samantha, unaware of exactly who the strapping older businessman was, tried out a bit of flirting with the help from her new heels on Harlan. Larissa, funny enough, admired Samantha’s taste in men and enlisted Jones’ help in planning a special surprise for her boyfriend. Yes, carriers, the Larissa-Harlan-Samantha three-way would (probably) commence by the close of Episode 6!

Carrie, proud to introduce her decided topic to Weaver, found herself disappointed by her beau’s reaction. Weaver was, to say the least, disappointed by Carrie’s “base” topic, and criticized its trivial nature. Carrie, made uncomfortable by Weaver’s insistence to brainstorm something better, realized that getting uncomfortable as a writer was one thing. Getting uncomfortable in your relationship, which should be a steady calming force in your life, was something entirely different. Back in Connecticut, Carrie subsequently inadvertently nailed Sebastian with one of her physically tossed out paper topics, luring Kydd into the classroom where Bradshaw had been forcing herself to brainstorm. Sebastian, congratulating Carrie on her acceptance into the New School program, inevitably delivered the perfect advice; write something that makes you smile, Bradshaw. In truth, it is Carrie’s perspective of the world that makes her such an interesting character, especially in the realm of Manhattan. Later, she admitted to swapping out Weaver’s advice in favor of her own original idea. Going with her instinct seemed to please her boyfriend, who praised her humor and bravery in her decision to work against the critics aka just him. Still, his constant nagging and prying only served to make Carrie more uncomfortable. Suddenly, the autumn coat he’d planted on her shoulders only felt itchy. Carrie, bad sex is one thing. A bad coat is the worst.

Maggie, desperate in all her pregnant un-glory, headed over to Sebastian’s that evening in search of some solace. Of course, the entire situation was made entirely cringe-worthy for us to watch, as the pregnant Maggie carried on guzzling down shot after shot of whiskey with Sebastian, who remained unaware of her current condition. Eventually, Maggie’s desperation reached an extreme, and she attempted to, once again, jump Sebastian’s bones for a little comfort. See, I thought The Carrie Diaries was going to have them sleep together in a drunken haze, only to have Maggie wake up and pin the pregnancy on Sebastian, who’s obviously loaded with cash, in the future. In the end, though, Sebastian, somewhat sober, wised up in time to weasel the truth out of Maggie after one sloppy kiss. He put her to sleep on his couch and promised to help sort out her options in the morning as a friend.

As the events of Episode 6 of Season 2 transpired, we also checked in with Walt on several occasions. Bennet (Jake Robinson), out a roommate so long as Stanford remained absent, moved into one of the shadiest area’s of New York City, Alphabet City. Walt, afraid to even stand in front of Bennet’s apartment building alone, was eventually advised by Mouse to invest in some Mace. Unfortunately, Walt’s terror in walking to Bennet’s front door got the best of him, and he ended up mistakenly using the painful spray on his own eyes in one of the most hilarious moments of the season. Great scream work by Brendan Dooling! Upstairs, Bennet tended to Walt’s eye wounds from the comfort of his new apartment. Walt, having realized just how safe he felt inside with Bennet, closed out his arc during Episode 6 with a very nice, “I love you.” Bennet doesn’t love Walt back, though… kidding.

Harlan, unfortunately, ended up missing out on Larissa’s big night. Samantha, decked out in some awesome dominatrix gear, mourned the wasting of a good pair of handcuffs. Eventually, the two realized just how opposites attract, and gave in to temptation. Of course, Larissa isn’t one to cheat, and Samantha isn’t a man-stealer. The two cleverly decided to film a sex tape for Harlan’s future enjoyment.

Realizing that Weaver’s coat was just not the right fabric for her sensitive skin, Carrie broke it off with her first tonight. Weaver thought making each other uncomfortable in the relationship was about positively challenging each other. Carrie, on the other hand, was looking for some peace in her relationship, and she never got it. In the end, Weaver admitted to knowing more about Sebastian than he’d let on after reading Carrie’s diary. In truth, he never felt like their relationship was the right fit, at least not for Carrie.

At home, Carrie continued sorting through her old clothes, eventually stumbling upon Sebastian’s jacket. By the close of Episode 6, Bradshaw had made the decision to head back over to her ex’s house, clad in his jacket, in order to set things straight. Unfortunately, the sight of Maggie passed out on Sebastian’s couch through the door window was enough to push Carrie away for good. She left Sebastian’s coat on the front steps of his house, and he arrived at the door just in time to watch Carrie speed away. The next morning, Mags awoke unaware of what had gone down, but Sebastian, having made a promise to his friend, set his own feelings for Carrie aside in order to help Maggie in her time of need.

Mouse decided to choose NYU as a safety school. Ugh, we all had that friend who chose our top choice as their safety school, Carrie. I too picked NYU as my top choice, and guess what. I went!

To close the recap, Episode 6 closed with Carrie buying her own damn coat and a red one at that. Back in the city, Carrie received an admirable B+ on her first paper on sex. Keeping the essay in her purse, Carrie decided to toss her birth control pills after realizing that she’d probably never know enough about sex to write about it in this wacky city. Oooh, Carrie. We get it.
