"Careless Whisper" - George Michael vs Seether - Showdown

Most anyone who has grown up in the U.S. during the long career of George Michael have heard the song Careless Whisper. Released in 1984, it was George Michael's first solo single at the time, though he was still performing in Wham! The song's memorable saxophone riff is the staple of the song. The sultry and attention grabbing riff seems to have led the way for other pop artists to incorporate the saxophone in similar ways into the music of that time. It is arguably one of the greatest break-up songs in pop music. The song reached number one in 25 countries has sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
We jump forward to 2009, to a South African rock band called Seether. They were already well established by this time and their hit song, Broken had become a hit being released in 2004 on the The Punisher film soundtrack. In 2009, they released a cover of Careless Whisper as a digital/mobile download. The cover was reportedly done as a joke. Their record label, Wind-Up Records, reportedly approached them to do a Valentine's Day song, so as a joke, they covered Careless Whisper as a hard rock song. The song got them a lot of publicity and the song was done very tastefully, if in pun.
I must say I was surprised to see Seether do a cover and not knowing what I was going to hear, I was skeptical, but after hearing their cover, I was hooked. They did a true-to-the-song cover that was surprisingly good. When you put the original up to the cover, you can't really compare as they are really different genres but I can see where a person would lean toward one or the other.
