California Chrome owner apologizes for Belmont Stakes outburst (VIDEO)

Steve Coburn, the owner of California Chrome, who lost the Belmont Stakes over the weekend apologized on Good Morning America this morning.

Coburn accused the winner Tonalist of being a coward after the race, suggesting it was unfair that the horses that California Chrome ran against did not run the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness.

I'm glad that he owned up to it because he said some really stupid things. He was just lost in the moment and came across as a sore loser.

And no, it's not "unfair". There is no "Triple Crown" organizational body which governs which race a horse should run or not. Each of the "Triple Crown" races are run differently with different rules and tracks. There is only ONE horse which runs for the "Triple Crown" if it ever came to it during the Belmont Stakes. Coburn seems to have gotten confused about this because of all the media attention.

If there was a rule that said the Belmont Stakes could only be run by horses who had competed in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, it would destroy the Belmont race. Some horses only run the Kentucky Derby and that's it, win or lose. Belmont can't convince those horses to run in both Preakness and Belmont just to make it "fair" for a horse that is gunning for the "Triple Crown", it's so stupid.
