Caitlyn Shadbolt sang 'You and I' on The X Factor Australia 2014 Live Show 5.

I thought this was Caitlyn's best performance. She's been growing, bit by bit, as the competition rolls on. And it's one of the more fun things to watch, much like it is with Marlisa. You can see these girls growing as performers, and it's a narrative we don't always get on these types of shows, in an age where it feels like everyone who makes these shows has released an album at some point. But most of all, I was surprised by just how fitting this song choice was for Caitlyn's country sensibilities. It was still pop-rock, but Caitlyn's voice gave it a country feel that made me hear the song in a new way, in addition to hearing new elements in Caitlyn's voice (like that soft, fragile quality she delivered at the end). I didn't necessarily feel it was a blowaway performance or anything, nor do I think Caitlyn should be ranked at or near the top of the pack. But she's consistent, and that can count for a lot on a show like this.
