Caitlyn Shadbolt sings 'Closer to the Edge' on The X Factor Australia 2014 (VIDEO)
Caitlyn Shadbolt sang 'Closer to the Edge' on The X Factor Australia 2014 Live Show 6.
There were some nice moments in this, but they were outweighed by a song choice that was just too big for her. This was all kinds of wrong for Caitlyn's voice and style, and it showed in how the pauses in the songs left awkward lulls in the performance, as she simply walked across the stage in silence. So weird. Even weirder is a trend I see on too many shows like this, where the key of the song is determined by the chorus, at the expense of the verses. The chorus might have sat just in the pocket of Caitlyn's voice, but the verses were a mess, and barely even audible, at times. They were just pitched too damn low. And to make matters worse, sacrificing the verses didn't even do all that much for the chorus, since it still wasn't great anyway. Which brings me to my overall point: if you have to sacrifice the verses because it's the only way your contestant is going to be able to sing the chorus, PICK A DIFFERENT SONG. I swear, this can't possibly be as hard as Ronan is making it seem.
But what did you think of Caitlyn Shadbolt?
