Broadway League Dimmed Lights for Joan Rivers Following Decision Change

The Broadway League changed its mind and asked theatres to dim their lights on Broadway today (Sept. 9) in memory of longtime theatre lover Joan Rivers.

Following some backlash of course.

After receiving complaints for not agreeing to dim their lights in honor of Joan, the Broadway League announced in a statement today:
Joan Rivers loved Broadway and we loved her. Due to the outpouring of love and respect for Joan Rivers from our community and from her friends and fans worldwide, the marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory.
The Great White Way said goodbye to Joan at 6:45 by dimming their lights for 60-seconds.

According to the League, Rivers was not previously eligible because: "Under our criteria people need to have been very active recently in the theater, or else be synonymous with Broadway -- people who made their careers here, or kept it up."

Rivers passed away on Sept. 4 following complications with throat surgery that led to cardiac and respiratory arrest.

She was laid to rest on Sunday (Sept. 7) after failing to survive being brought out of a medically induced coma.
