TMZ reports that NFL star Aaron Hernandez has officially been charged with murder in connection with the death of a former semi-pro football player.

The 23-year-old Hernandez was arraigned this morning in a Massachusetts courtroom after having been arrested earlier today at his Massachusetts residence. The arrest is in connection to the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was discovered close to the former New England Patriot's home last week. Odin appeared to have been shot through the back of the head.

In addition to the murder charge, Hernandez faces five gun-related charges. He has pled not guilty on all charges.

Less than two hours after Hernandez's arrest earlier today, the New England Patriots announced they would be releasing Hernandez, via an official statement (obtained through NBC News):

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss," the statement read. "Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

Prosecutors say Hernandez was in communication with the victim just 10 hours before the victim's death. Lloyd is believed to have been dating the sister of Aaron's fiancee at the time of his murder, though specific details surrounding the crime remain unclear.
