Brave - Review

The newest Disney/Pixar film Brave is yet another instant-masterpiece from the company that finally brings a strong female character into the fold. What was advertised as a fantasy adventure is something much deeper as only the best animation studio around could envision.

Merida is the princess of her kingdom, anxious to carve her own path of life that seems to be the opposite of what her mom Elinor has in store for her. Her defiance brings chaos, and ultimately a spell that she thrives to break in order to change her fate.

Without spoiling anything about the movie, as expected the storyline is perfection, weaving a classic old-fashioned tale for the ages. This is the modern fairy tale, as told by Disney/Pixar. It’s refreshing to see so much originality in an animated movie, especially leaning so much toward the Scottish side of things. I personally loved the accents, the beautiful and stunning landscapes, and the established lore. I wouldn’t change a thing about the movie’s presentation or eclectic cast of characters. The use of Scottish-style music is also a welcome change from the typical pop/billboard hits you hear in many modern animated movies.

My absolute favorite thing about Brave is the immersive character depth that is presented between Merida and Elinor; like Up before it, a beautiful bond between two people is so easily established in just a handful of scenes. It makes the final act (conclusion) of the movie all the more powerful. Even when it isn’t centered around the daughter/mother dynamic, the relationships within the film, especially through Merida’s family, are thickly represented. In particular, Fergus is noticeably hilarious and sticks out quite often as a form of comic relief. I also adored Merida’s three brothers from beginning to end. Obviously the voice acting is top-notch with Kelly Macdonald as Merida standing out in particular, but everyone is amazing and quite great throughout.

The power of simple storytelling is evident here as the filmmakers are able to weave an exciting and touching tale without getting too complicated. The advertising team definitely did a good job shrouding the actual plot in deep mystery, and thankfully made much of the movie a welcome surprise. We follow Merida on a beautiful journey of self-discovery and along the way are treated to so many ideas that are seldom explored in animated features.

If you’re looking for a great animated movie to take the kids too, or even a phenomenally well-made character study, Brave is that movie. Disney/Pixar has certainly yet to tarnish their perfect track record. I see another Best Animated Film nomination coming… I absolutely loved this movie. / Rating: A+
