Boy George Defends Pussy Riot on Twitter
Boy George has taken to Twitter to join a growing list of Hollywood celebs voicing their outrage over the arrest and conviction of Russian punk activists Pussy Riot.
Boy George tweeted: "It's a sad day because I actually love Russia! What's happening to this great nation that it's afraid of poofs, Madonna and pussy!"
Elijah Wood also tweeted about the controversial arrest: "a shame to hear the Pussy Riot were found guilty, but not surprised. I truly hope their sentence is minimal. #freepussyriot."
Tennis star Martina Navratilova also tweeted her support: "Today is free pussy riot day," "How great is that? Democracy at its best. And by imprisoning them, Putin is making it so much a bigger deal!!!"
I don't know that Boy George holds much sway with the Russian government, but hopefully the widespread international outrage will at least get their sentence shortened to something more appropriate to trespassing than to a "hate crime."
From THR:
Despite global outcry and statements of protest from Madonnaand Paul McCartney, a Russian court convicted three of the band's members -- Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 -- for reciting a "punk prayer" slamming Russian President Vladimir Putin during a flash performance at a cathedral in February. They were sentenced to two years in jail.
