Box Office: 'The Martian' Blasts Off To $55 Million Opening

"The Martian" starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott opened to $55 at the U.S. box office. This was one of the highest-grossing October debuts in history.

According to Variety, this was Ridley Scott's second highest opening (behind "Hannibal's" $58 million) and Matt Damon's second best premiere as well ("The Bourne Ultimatum's" $69.3 million).

"The Martian" opened to favorable reviews from critics and fans alike getting a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics called this one of Scott's best directed films ever.
