The dark crime drama Prisoners claimed the top spot at the weekend box office, earning $21.4 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, depicts the nightmare faced by two families whose daughters are kidnapped. Jackman plays a father of one of the girls, who takes matters into his own hands when he loses faith in the police investigation.
Last weekend's top grosser, Insidious: Chapter 2, took a 64 percent drop in week two, bringing in a $14.5 million haul. However, the domestic 10-day total for the film remains impressive, as the horror flick is now sitting pretty with $60.9 million overall.
But it wasn't all good news, as 3D dance movie Battle of the Year pretty much bombed. The much-hyped movie only barely cracked the top five, delivering an underwhelming $5 million gross. Yet if there is any positive in the underwhelming performance of the film, which stars Josh Holloway, Chris Brown and Josh Peck, it's that the film only cost $20 million to produce, meaning that the film doesn't have as far to go as most when it comes to making back its budget. But the film still has a bit of a journey to make if it's actually going to turn a profit. The weekend gross for the film was only half of what Sony/Screen Gems was projecting for the opening.
Mob comedy The Family fell 50 percent this week, grossing $7 million to come in at No. 3. Meanwhile, Spanish-language hit Instructions Not Included continues to impress, taking in $5.7 million for No. 4, bringing its domestic gross to $34.7 million.
In other box office news, We're the Millers has remained strong, taking only a 14 percent hit to come in at No. 6 with $4.7 million. In its seventh weekend, the film has brought its total to $138.7 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide.
Lastly, the IMAX rerelease of The Wizard of Oz managed to crack the top 10, coming in at No. 9 with $2.8 million. The release is in celebration of the film's 75th anniversary.
