Box Office: 'LEGO Movie' Crushes Competition for Second Straight Week

The LEGO Movie is officially a juggernaut. The animated blockbuster easily retained the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office, crushing the competition for a second straight week with $48.8 million for the three-day weekend.

The Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures movie is expected to reach a four-day gross of over $60 million, making this the second-best all-time showing for the Valentine's Day and Presidents Day holiday after, coincidentally enough, romantic comedy Valentine's Day, which premiered to $63.1 million in 2010.

However, despite The LEGO Movie retaining its top spot, there were several new entries to debut in the Top 10 this week: three of which are remakes of films from the 1980s, believe it or not (and given Hollywood's relative creative bankruptcy in recent years, it should be fairly easy to believe).

About Last Night, a makeover of the 1986 film starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe, took in $27 million for the three-day weekend, thanks in large part to the ascension of Kevin Hart to major status as a box office draw. The film is on its way to a four-day opening weekend of $30.2 million for the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 spot belonged to MGM and Sony's remake of the 1987 action classic RoboCop, which raked in $21.5 million for the three-day weekend, for a projected four-day gross of approximately $25 million. While No. 3 isn't a bad start for the film, its $100 million budget makes this fairly sparse opening a bit of a disappointment. Luckily, the film is doing much better overseas, having earned $70 million in international markets, with a projected gross of $200 million worldwide after the movie opens in China, Brazil and Japan.

The third 80s remake in the Top 10 this week is Endless Love, Universal's remake of the 1981 Franco Zeffirelli film that is mostly remembered for the massively-successful title song by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. The remake held steady at No. 5, with a decent $13.4 million gross.

The fourth new film of the week, Winter's Tale, disappointed at the box office, bringing in an unfortunate $7.8 million for the three days, a mere fraction of its $57 million budget. The film, which stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe and Matt Bomer, has been largely panned by critics. Of course, not every winter-themed picture has been beaten down at the box office...

Disney's Frozen inches closer to the $1 billion mark, as the film's worldwide gross has now surpassed $955 million, making it now the No. 3 animated movie of all time. Now onto the Oscars in two weeks! (Seriously, how could it lose now?)
