Box Office: 'LEGO Movie' Is No. 1 For Third Week, Beats 'Pompeii'

It's the third weekend in a row at No. 1 for The LEGO Movie.

The animated film from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow claimed the top spot with $31.5 million, an impressive decline of only 37 percent. Its domestic total is now north of $183.2 million. All in all, it was a successful weekend for the film, which demolished newcomers 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii.

McG's 3 Days to Kill, starring Kevin Costner, came in at No. 2 with a soft $12.3 million opening. Co-starring Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld and Connie Nielsen from a story by Luc Besson (The Transporter), the film features Costner playing an international spy intent on salvaging his fractured relationships with his daughter and wife -- but not before completing one last mission. The opening gross is underwhelming, but the film only cost about $28 million to produce, so the film should be able to recoup its investment with the combination of home video revenue and international ticket sales. At the very least, it has a better shot at turning a profit than the other big newcomer at the box office this week...

Pompeii came in at No. 3 with a paltry $10 million, a mere fraction of the film's $100 million budget. Starring Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Kiefer Sutherland, the movie is an epic retelling of the destruction of Pompeii as a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Constantin Films, the studio that financed the film, is hoping the movie will do strong business overseas. However, early results haven't been promising, as Pompeii grossed just $22.8 million from 37 markets.

In other box office developments, RoboCop held steady at No. 4 with $9.4 million, while George Clooney's The Monuments Men finished out the top five with $8.1 million. But the biggest development is the continued box office power of Disney's Frozen, which crossed the $980 million mark worldwide to become the second-highest grossing animated film of all-time after Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3, which holds the record with $1.1 billion. Also huge: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire reached $423.6 million domestically, officially making it the No. 10 title of all time in North America.
