Box Office: 'Dumb and Dumber To' Opens at No. 1

Dumb and Dumber To is a hit. The sequel is No. 1 at the box office, opening to $38.1 million. Hitting theaters twenty years after the original, Dumb and Dumber To reunites Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels with original directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly. The film, which cost roughly $40 million to make, is already close to making back its budget after taking the top spot from Disney's Big Hero 6.

Big Hero 6 remained fairly strong in its second weekend. Although it dropped 36 percent and finished at No. 2, it still raked in a healthy $36 million. In addition, the movie has pushed Disney past $4 billion in worldwide ticket sales for the year, marking only the second time in history the studio has achieved this feat. Similarly, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar remained strong in week two. The space epic dropped only 39 percent, raking in $29.2 million to bring its domestic total to $97.8 million, and its worldwide haul to well above $300 million. Interstellar is sitting pretty at $321.9 million in global ticket sales.

The No. 4 spot was claimed by a newcomer: romance drama Beyond the Lights, a co-production of Relativity, Undisputed Cinema, Homegrown Pictures and BET Films. The movie, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, tells the story of an R&B singer who falls in love with a police officer after he rescues her from a suicide attempt. The movie, which grossed $6.5 million, is close to making back its modest $7 million budget, which is impressive considering this is the first film from Relativity's new multicultural division.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Gone Girl, fresh off its big win at the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday. The potential Oscar contender raked in $4.7 million to bring its North American total to $152.7 million. This was enough to keep it ahead of other Oscar hopefuls such as Fury, which came in at No. 7 with $3.8 million, and Birdman, which finally cracked the top 10 with $2.5 million.
