Box Office: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Rules All With $92 Million
This weekend was the official start of summer movie season, the most lucrative time of year for the film industry. And it got off to an amazing start thanks to your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened with a stellar $92 million. Couple this with the $116 million international totals, and factoring in the residual gross from the film's foreign opening over two weeks ago, the movie now has a worldwide box office total of $369 million.
However, the movie was unfortunately unable to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the No. 1 opener of the year so far, as that particular Marvel film still holds the title with $95 million in its debut weekend. But The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still making a huge dent in the history books, becoming the 7th biggest May opening in history. Ever since the full-length trailer premiered in the U.S. back in February, anticipation for this film has only gotten bigger, so this isn't a huge surprise; although Sony feels Spidey's appeal isn't just confined to the U.S. market.
"What made this weekend so unique and special was that we had a terrific opening in the U.S., but the picture has now opened worldwide, and on every continent, we enjoyed stunning results," said Rory Bruer, Sony's distribution chief.

Meanwhile, The Other Woman maintained its hold as the nation's top comedy, coming in at No. 2 with $14.2 million. Also remaining strong, Heaven Is For Real, which continues to do spectacular business in its third week, grossing $8.7 million to nab the No. 3 spot. Its domestic gross so far is now north of $65 million, continuing the impressive box office run that started just three weeks ago.
In other, non-Spidey superhero news, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is finally showing signs of slowing down, coming in at No. 4 this week with $7.8 million. However, not before hitting $680 million worldwide. The film bumped up its global box office totals with this weekend's gross, which managed to keep it ahead of Rio 2. Of course, it wasn't exactly bad news for that animated film, as it crossed the $100 million mark in its fourth weekend by earning $7.6 million. Its fifth place finish now brings it to a North American gross of $106.5 million.
