The No. 1 comedy on TV has drafted one of the medium's true legends for a guest-starring appearance. In what is perhaps the least surprising casting news of the year, Bob Newhart has signed on to reprise his Emmy-winning role as Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory later this year.

This marks Newhart's third appearance as Sheldon and Leonard’s childhood idol, after his first appearance last season and his recent return as Professor Proton this past November.

Newhart's return has no specific premiere date just yet, but let the speculation begin! What brings Professor Proton back into the world of Sheldon and Leonard? Does a character played by Bob Newhart even need a reason?
