Blizzard 2010 - Thundersnow

This was CJ's first snow! You can view the videos of her running at the Madison Square Park dog run in my Facebook.

I dropped CJ off at the daycare since I had some ramen brunch with some friends at Ippundo in the East Village. It was just a few snow flurries then. I got erroneous information that the blizzard was going to last just a few hours, so I planned on picking CJ up at about 5 pm. Little did I know that the blizzard would actually pick up steam at about 6 or so.

I picked up CJ at the daycare, and she was thrilled to see snow on the ground! She immediately ate the snow since she loves ice. I couldn't control her excitement -- she was literally rolling on the sidewalk and running circles around me -- so I decided to let her go free at the dog run near the daycare. It was kinda scary since she was pulling me and I didn't want to fall in the snow.

I let her run in the dog run where there were a couple of dogs, who as usual could not keep up with my 7 month old puppy! Eventually their owners gave up -- as the wind just started to pick up. CJ was also getting cold. When we walked back, I noticed that she was shivering, which worried me. And then... THUNDER! and LIGHTNING! WTF. We were getting thundersnow!

Then it kinda just got worse walking back. I had to pick CJ up a couple of times to get her feet off the ground. The snow was blowing at our faces -- why were we out at that time? It was horrible! (LOL) The walk up 9th Avenue was specially horrid -- which I didn't expect since I wondered how bad it could get -- it did. There were small hills of snow on the sidewalk because of the strong wind, and there was a section with scaffolding that acted like a windtunnel.

Anyway, we got home safely, and I dried CJ with a towel to her delight. She was also too tired to chew her food -- so I had to cut them up into pieces -- she's such a princess sometimes. She shivered for a while so I let her wear her sweater, and she fell asleep. My only worry is that she needs to pee at some point and there's still white out conditions outside as I post this. Maybe tomorrow morning. And then hopefully if the snow has stopped I can take some better video of the white powder.

The future looks bleak however. I think on Tuesday it will start getting warm in New York (in the 40s) and the snow will melt then freeze overnight which is going to make life miserable for everyone here. Snow turns into black slush immediately in the city anyway, so as it is, this is not going to be a good week. Sigh. But then again, hopefully some great video/pictures tomorrow morning when everything is still pristine. And then everything just goes downhill...
