Billy Elliot - The Musical - My Rave Review

Billy Elliot The Musical

I watched the matinee of Billy Elliot the Musical on Wednesday and I absolutely loved it.

It was quite a feeling leaving the theater after watching young people have the time of their lives for 2 hours. The enthusiasm of the cast magnified ten times over on the stage is just the antidote for jaded people like me. From the little girls who played Billy's dance classmates, to Michael, his best friend, and Billy himself -- these kids are responsible for the success of this show every day to the tune of $1.3 million a week in the box office. I'm impressed.

All the showstoppers involved the kids. There were a couple of numbers where the choreography had the adult "coal miners" dancing with the little ballerinas which was lovely. Billy's dance number with Michael in "Expressing Yourself" was theater magic -- made more amazing by the fact that Billy and Michael, played by Kiril Kulish and David Bologna during the show -- are just 14 and 13. Two of Billy's solos: the dance with the older Billy and "Electricity" were also highlights.

After the show, we waited by the door, and David Bologna already had his Sharpie ready to sign autographs. Yes, be a diva early! I loved it.

Billy Elliot the Musical is definitely going to win the Tony Award for Best Musical this year, and certainly for Best Choreography. Hopefully I don't jinx it by predicting that.

I will definitely watch this show again. Heck, I'm so inspired right now, I've been browsing for season tickets to the American Ballet Theater in Lincoln Center in the Spring.

Go watch Billy Elliot!
