Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is getting an infusion of Big Love.

Bill Paxton, star of the late HBO series, is joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a major recurring arc this season as Agent John Garrett. Paxton is scheduled to appear in at least four episodes of the ABC series, beginning in late February/early March.

Showrunner Jed Whedon wouldn’t reveal what event brings comic book character Garrett into the series, but fellow producer Maurissa Tancharoen stated, “He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets.”

Whedon adds, "When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two."

In the comics, Garrett suffered mortal injuries in the line of duty, prompting S.H.I.E.L.D. to turn him into a cyborg in order to save his life. It's a bit of a parallel with what Agent Coulson has gone through, although the show has rarely stuck to the comics in any of the origin stories of the characters it imports (Tuesday night's episode featured an entirely new take on the origin of supervillain Blizzard).

So what will Paxton's Agent John Garrett bring to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? We'll find out when Paxton makes his first appearance on the show in a little over a month's time.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 8:00 PM ET on ABC.
