Beyonce to Perform, Receive Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs 2014
Let it never be said that Beyonce is not gradually taking over the entire pop culture universe.
Beyonce will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards 2014. Queen Bey will also accept the ceremony's highest honor: the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. This will be her 12th award at the VMAs, having won a motherload of trophies as both as a solo artist and as a member of Destiny's Child. And she's probably going to get more than just the one award this year, since she leads the pack of nominees with the eight nominations, including Video of the Year for "Drunk In Love" (featuring husband Jay Z).
In accepting the Video Vanguard award, Beyonce joins a roster of previous recipients that includes past legends and current/future icons such as Madonna, Justin Timberlake, U2, Guns N’ Roses, and the award's namesake, Michael Jackson. It's basically a Lifetime Achievement Award that acknowledges that while your career is nowhere near over yet, you've pretty much satisfied the criteria for a legend. Or, at least, that's always been my takeaway from the award. If nothing else, Beyonce is in some seriously good company with this honor.
The MTV Video Music Awards 2014, featuring performances by Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Usher, and 5 Seconds of Summer (with more performers and presenters expected to be announced) will air Sunday, August 24 at 9:00 PM on (well, duh) MTV.
