Best Makeup Oscar Finalists Revealed, 'The Hobbit' Snubbed

The finalists for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar have been revealed, and the finalists who've been snubbed are as surprising as those that have actually made the cut.

This year's finalists are:

American Hustle

Dallas Buyers Club

The Great Gatsby

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

The Lone Ranger

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is a bit of a surprise, given the crass nature of the subject matter, but this award isn't really about the subject itself so much as the craft behind it, and it's hard to argue with Bad Grandpa's craft, given how thoroughly unrecognizable Johnny Knoxville was in his role.

However, some of the snubs are surprising. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a fairly shocking omission, given how well Peter Jackson's Middle Earth saga has done in the past. Last year, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey snagged a nomination in this category, although the film would eventually lose out to Les Misérables. My theory on its snub is that there wasn't enough new work between this film and the last one for the Academy's Makeup branch to consider it for a nomination, although I admit I haven't seen the film yet and am just going off of trailer. But The Hobbit trilogy so far doesn't seem to have as variable a sampling of different visual makeup styles from one film to the next as the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, which managed a nomination in this category for all but The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Also omitted was 12 Years A Slave, a presumed frontrunner in the category for how exquisitely it captured its era. I would imagine the makeup job was too subtle for the Academy, as they tend to like more extravagant, ostentatious makeup and hairstyling work. It's likely why Lee Daniels' The Butler didn't make the cut. With that said, this should be an interesting race, given how widely varied the seven finalists are.

We'll find out which three films make the cut when Oscar nominations are announced January 16, 2013.
