Ben Haenow sings 'Cry Me A River' on The X Factor UK 2014 (VIDEO)
Ben Haenow sang 'Cry Me A River' on The X Factor UK Live Show 6 on November 15, 2014.
I didn't think this was Ben's best performance, but it was still pretty damn good. Ben is the kind of singer who can add a layer of grit to even the most straightforward songs. And while 'Cry Me A River' (popularized by Julie London in the 1950s, although Ben is doing the Michael Buble version here) isn't exactly straightforward, per se, it does leave open the possibility for Ben to convey heaps of emotion through the story of the song. And that's where all that grit and rawness serves him well. This competition would be so much less interesting without Ben, and I think this performance illustrates just how much he brings to the show. Not many rockers would have been able to transition so seamlessly into the more careful, precise vocal stylings of big band.
This was so good, I almost wish he'd been singing the Justin Timberlake song of the same name. Maybe somewhere down the line, he could. Although the more opportunity he's given to make "smoldering eyes" at the camera, the more he looks like Colin Farrell. I'm not sure whether or not this is a good thing.
But what do you think of Ben Haenow?
