Ben and Kate - Series Premiere - Recap - Pilot

Comedy series Ben and Kate premiered tonight with its first episode, “Pilot.” The show’s storyline centers around five main characters: siblings Ben & Kate, Kate’s daughter Maddie, Kate’s best friend BJ, and Ben’s best friend Tommy.

In the pilot, Ben isn’t fond of Kate’s new boyfriend George, and Ben attempts to crash his ex-girlfriend’s wedding.

Ben (Nat Faxon) and Kate (Dakota Johnson) had a tough childhood growing up since they basically had to raise themselves. Ben might be the older sibling, but Kate is the more serious individual of the two. Kate became pregnant at a very young age. (This scared off the father of the child, so she never heard from him again).

Ben moved away from home a couple years ago. If he ever had anything to resolve at home, he would drop by Kate’s neighborhood to take care of his biz in secret. Kate knew there was a reason why Ben was dropping by out of the blue, but she couldn’t quite pinpoint why. Ben only visits his sister Kate and his niece Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) if he wants to make amends with someone or something.

After her break-up with Maddie’s biological father, Kate re-entered the dating game. She started seeing a man named George. Ben barged in through the front door and gave George a high-five. Ben immediately noticed that the high-five wasn’t genuine. (There was something just off-putting about the way George high-fived him).

The next scene took place at the restaurant that Kate works in—”Buddy’s Bar and Grill.” Kate, Ben, and Ben's best friend Tommy (Echo Kellum) met up with Kate’s best friend BJ (Lucy Punch) at the restaurant. (BJ is actually from England). Since Kate works as a waitress at the restaurant, she served food and beverages to Ben, Tommy, and BJ... only thing is, Kate was wearing a fanny pack around her waist:

Ben: “You look like a Korean lady golfer!”

BJ: “Do you know what ‘fanny’ means in my country (England)?”

Kate: “Do you know what ‘B.J.’ means in my country (U.S.A)?”

During Kate’s lunch break, Kate and B.J. had “Girl Talk.” Kate mentioned that she hasn’t slept with George yet, and that she’s planning to sleep with him on their tenth date. BJ asked Kate if her daughter Maddie has had sex yet. Kate informed BJ, “She’s (Maddie) only five.”

While Ben was driving Maddie around town, she asked him why he was in town. He mentioned that he received an e-mail from his ex-girlfriend Darcy. (Darcy asked Ben to call her). Ben drove to Maddie’s house, only to see her trying on her wedding dress. Ben was surprised to see that Maddie has already moved on with another man.

Back at the house, Ben and Tommy put on night vision goggles, and planned a way to crash Darcy’s wedding. Kate also got involved in the action. They headed to a wedding chapel, and practiced their script at the altar. Kate played the role of the groom, Tommy played the role of the bride, and Ben practiced his ‘objection’ speech. Ben desperately wanted to tell Darcy not to get married to another man.

Back at the house, BJ applied bright red lipstick onto Maddie’s lips. BJ wanted to give Maddie more sex appeal... even though Maddie is only 5 years old.

Later, BJ met up with Kate at the restaurant. Kate was nervous about not being able to perform well in bed, so she asked BJ for some tips. BJ told Kate to draw attention to her mouth:

BJ: “Just remember to put stuff in your mouth.” LOL!

Thereafter, Kate invited George over to the restaurant. While they were conversing, Kate accidentally butt-dialed Ben. (Ben was actually on his way to Darcy’s wedding). Meanwhile, Kate had trouble taking off her sweater... so she ended up exposing her bra. BJ pulled Kate aside to assist her with her sweater. After Kate & BJ walked away, George called the other woman that he was having an affair with. (He didn’t realize that Ben could hear everything on the other line). Ben decided to make a U-turn to return to Kate’s restaurant... to inform Kate of George’s infidelity.

During the interrogation, George came up with a lame excuse as to why he was seeing another woman. He stated that he didn’t believe his and Kate’s relationship was mutually exclusive.

After Kate broke up with George, Ben had 15 minutes to crash the wedding (or, so he thought). When Ben confessed his true feelings to Darcy, Darcy told Ben that the wedding took place an hour ago.

In the final scene, Kate pushed a fully-clothed Ben into the swimming pool. Kate, BJ, Tommy, and Maddie all jumped into the pool (fully-clothed).
