BBC America Renews 'Atlantis' for a Second Season After One Episode

BBC America is going all-in on its newest series. The network has renewed Atlantis for a second season just one episode into its first season.
The renewal was a foregone conclusion once Atlantis debuted to a record audience for the network's Supernatural Saturday programming bloc, drawing 838,000 viewers, the most viewers ever for a Supernatural Saturday series premiere. The show was presumably helped by premiering after the official re-airing of the blockbuster Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor". But by any measure, Atlantis has to be considered a huge success.
In addition, Atlantis was a smash hit in its premiere in the United Kingdom, delivering the biggest debut for a Saturday night drama on the BBC since 2006. Atlantis follows the story of Jason (Jack Donnelly), a 21st Century man who suddenly finds himself sent back to the ancient land of Atlantis, where he surprisingly thrives. The series is considered by critics to be a pretty compelling fusion of history and Greek mythology, and the series includes a wide, diverse array of characters such as Hercules (Mark Addy) and Pythagoras (Robert Emms).
"'Atlantis' is off to a fantastic start and is the centerpiece of our Saturday nights for the next twelve weeks," says Richard De Croce, head of programming at BBC America. "We're committed to bringing our viewers even more entertaining episodes inspired by Greek mythology from [creator] Howard [Overman] and the talented team in Season 2."
