Awkward. - Recap: The BFGFBFF
MTV’s Awkward. saw our leading lady, Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards), and her beau , Matty McKibbin (Beau Mirchoff), taking a much needed step in their budding relationship. The sex came first, but as “A Little Less Conversation” showcased quite well, communication is key. Also, I do realize that I referred to Matty as Jenna’s “beau” and that the actor’s name is Beau. That’s talented writing for you. You're welcome.
The episode opened with a, well, awkward day at school following Jenna’s massive misstep of telling Jake (Brett Davern) about her pregnancy scare before filling Matty in. Matty seemed distant, especially on the sexual front, and red flags started flying up left and right for Jenna. Matty wanted to… "talk." *gulp* Meanwhile, Val (Desi Lydic) was on the hunt for every last damn peanut on campus in the name of a recently deceased Ricky Schwartz.
Val: “When was the last time you had a nut in your mouth?”
Jenna: “It was a good question.”
Things seemed to be going well enough for Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) and Jake aka Jakara. They tell each other everything, so of course, Tamara had been clued in on Jenna’s almost-baby prior to Jenna even bringing up her issue with Matty. Ming (Jessica Lu) also managed to wrangle up a relationship, shocking the other two-thirds of our trio. Henry was quiet, not uttering a word the entire episode, but he made a solid first impression on the group with a quick public boob grab. The Asian Mafia was, needless to say, intrigued. The more Becca time the better, I always say. Becca was quick to grill Ming on her new romance outside of the sanctuary. Ming was appropriately prepared with the knowledge of everything from how she’d met the boy (waiting in line for the new iphone) to how long he’d worn braces (Trick question. He didn’t).

Ah, I didn’t think it was possible to love Sadie Saxton (Molly Tarlov) any more that I already did, but we got some much-needed light shed on the personal life of Awkard.’s resident badass bitch this episode. The entire school had resolved that Sadie was to blame for Ricky’s death, even prompting Val to drag the authorities into the mix. The resulting scene in her office was, as expected, refreshingly sarcastic. Sadie denied having relations with Ricky at all, even going as far as to claim to be a virgin. Still, is there anything scarier than Sadie Saxton threatening legal action on this show? No pap smear for her!

Since she was six, Tamara had been dreaming of the opportunity for the ultimate double date… the BFGFBFF would be a night to remember, and a means for Jenna to avoid having to “talk” with Matty one on one. Jake and Tamara would play the buffer, and Jenna would avoid her anticipated dumping. I did enjoy the “Chinese Fire Drill” scene in which all six friends (Ming and Henry tagged along, too) continuously switched seats in Jake’s convertible. Everyone wanted to sit next to someone and mostly everyone wanted to avoid someone else. Henry ended up on Ming’s lap, and amidst the chaos of Jenna avoiding Matty, he got a call from Sadie who’d just downed a pint of ice cream. Tamara attempted to poke fun at Sadie’s new “killer” status.
Sadie: “Tell gingerskank to go f*** herself.”

The six ended up missing their reservation, but Jenna thought fast. Charades! Her least favorite party experience would have to fill in. While Ming got cozy sucking face with Fred Wu (Yes, Henry was nothing more than a beard to fool Becca), the others did their best to keep occupied. Throughout the game, Matty continuously attempted to cuddle up to Jenna, sending her mixed signals. One thing that was clear, Jakenna still had their mental connection. From nailing charades to catching their song, the iconic “Don’t Go Knocking On My Back Door,” pop up on the radio, the two appeared to have kept a true friendship. Matty and Tamara were not amused. My funniest moment this week might have been when Tamara asked Jenna to use the “bathroom bathroom,” only to have Jenna suggest that she use the one in her parents’ bedroom. Eventually, Jake pieced together the puzzle and apologized to Tamara for his lack of attention and affection. As she put it, Jake’s like the girl in the relationship. In the Jakara relationship, they’re both girls, so it works. Jenna would have to work harder with Matty.
While Jenna and Tamara spoke, Matty chatted with Sadie over the phone. As it turned out, her family had left her alone once her father went broke. With her mother in rehab for “exhaustion,” she felt pushed to the brink. I’m glad the show exposed us to the looming threat of an eating disorder for Sadie, and that Matty was the one to reel her in before she could hurt herself. We knew Sadie had weight issues, but this is something different. It was possible to love you even more, Sadie! I'm welcome.

Jenna, fearing “the talk” Matty had been aluding to all episode, took it upon herself to attempt to break up with him in a rush before he could leave her. Matty put her mind at ease. His issue was simply that she’d told Jake her secret first, frustrating him in the process due to their obvious lack of a friendship within their relationship. Jenna had feared opening up to Matty emotionally because of his quite blaring “embarrassment” of her in the past. Matty, on the other hand, denied ever feeling embarrassed of her at all. Eh, I have to call bull. The entire plot of season 1 surrounded Matty’s obsession over his reputation and his keeping his love for Jenna hidden behind closed doors. Still, this Matty is different, as we’d just witnessed in his conversation with Sadie. In the end, Hamilton and McKibbin took the step they needed to take, and the two agreed to put more trust into their coupling.
