The full episode video and review of Awkward Season 2 Episode 6: "What Comes First: Sex Or Love?":

Best episode ever. Straight up, that was Awkward’s finest half-hour of television. On every single level the show pulled out something amazing. At its best, Awkward is witty satire on teenage high school life with a nice heart to it. Last night, that is exactly what the show delivered. The funny thing is, the show delivered on a night when all its characters could only talk about love.

I have made it no secret that I think when the high school characters like Jenna talk about love it is pretty laughable. I mean, come on! Jake told Jenna he loved her after six weeks of dating, that is just hilarious. When I make those comments, however, I do not mean it in a mean way. Simply put, I think more so than any topic, the theme of love in Awkward truly demonstrates how young and naïve some of these characters are. At times, that can be highly annoying and dramatic, because that is what high schoolers specialize in. Other times though, it really is so refreshing to watch a couple of kids figure out those big life issues. There is something about seeing young people approach life without all of the hang-ups and cynicism that age brings you; you cannot help but smile and remember yourself at that age as well.

What really sold me on tonight was the role of the adults. A couple weeks ago, I mentioned how the adults could not always be as ridiculous as the kids. If there was not a mature stable force every once and a while, the show heads off the rails. In other words, Ally, Val and Jenna’s mom getting sloshed on a Tuesday afternoon? Hilarious. Jenna’s mom coming to her later to really talk to her daughter and help her process some pretty big feelings? Fantastic. That exchange took a very good episode and made it the best the series has ever had.

I know Awkward will not always hit the mark perfectly, because it has to juggle a lot of different thematic ideas. But when everything comes together like it did tonight, I cannot help but love this show.

Quick Hits:

The entire afternoon winefest was maybe the funniest thing the show has ever done. I was living for that moment, and then Sadie showed up! I want more Ally and Sadie scenes every episode, because that was just priceless. As was Val and Jenna’s mom’s facial expression throughout the entire exchange. Emmys!

Speaking of Sadie, she was on fire tonight. Loved her using Rickey. Loved her putting the dollar in Jenna’s bra. Lovedlovedloved her calling Rickey back. Sadie has a had a lot of nice moments this season, and has definitely been fleshed out as more than just a one-liner character

So Jenna and Matty are heading back to the friend-zone, which will inevitably lead to feelings reemerging. It is really cute how she keeps deceiving herself there with that whole situation. Oh to be young again.

Glad to see Tamara owning her little accident. Not really surprised though, that is totally her.

So glad Ally is back. Even happier she is having a multiple-episode appearance. God love her

Who else cringed terribly when Jenna announced her sexual plans with Jake over the PA. Damn, girl cannot get a break. Glad to see that they did not go through with it, however, cause she was totally doing it for the wrong reasons. Also, Jake is adorable and even though I back Jenna and Matty together, I recognize his intrinsic adorableness.

Loved last night, and now I cannot wait for next week!
