Awkward. - Recap: Is Anne Hathaway Sexy?

Awkward. continued Season 3 tonight with a hilarious episode that split our time between Jenna’s relationship woes and Sadie’s zany new romance.

Episode 13 of Season 3 of Awkward, “Taking Sides,” gave me the significant dosage of Sadie Saxton (Molly Tarlov) I’ve been craving since the series returned a few weeks ago. Even better, the potential love interest set up during the first half of Season 3, an appropriately awkward chemistry with “Boo Radley” progeny Austin (Shane Harper), resurfaced in the Palos High halls. Meanwhile, Jenna (Ashley Rickards) dealt with the fall-out of choosing to lose Matty (Beau Mirchoff). See, your friends getting along with your boyfriend is all fine and dandy until you let your lips lock with another. Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed), Jake (Brett Davern), and Ming (Jessica Lu) felt torn for most of Episode 13, only to have made a clear decision by the close of the show. Here is the Recap and Review of Season 3 Episode 13 of Awkward. “Taking Sides”!

Whoever thought up the idea to pair Sadie Saxton, a girl who once owned a horse named Priscilla Queen of the Desert, with this Austin fellow, a dude who probably has “dead hamsters in his freezer,” deserves a raise. Episode 13 chronicled the first steps of Sadie’s newly revived love life. While most of Sadie’s energy this week seemed to be directed towards helping Matty cope with the loss of Jenna and all of her “training bra” glory, Austin would sneak up on Saxton through a few wacky texts and "telepathic" conversations.

Sadie, refusing to admit to her feelings for the boy, initially attempted to shake him off with a little help from Lissa (Greer Grammer), who was perfectly happy taking the hottie off of Sadie’s hands, crazy or otherwise. Austin is the kind of guy who counts out a specific number of carrots, the most attractive of vegetables, for lunch. Sadie is the kind of chick who chews people like Austin up and spits them out, yet there’s a strange allure to the newcomer that has Saxton charmed beyond belief. Matty would foster the relationship during a movie night with his friend. While the rest of the group would attempt to deal with an uncomfortable barbecue situation drummed up by Jenna and Collin (Nolan Funk), the two would share the details on their new love interests. That’s right, while attempts to win back Jenna were futile, Matty has a new girl, Devon, on the horizon as well. More importantly, the difficult question was posed… Is Anne Hathaway sexy? Sadie, citing Matty’s poor taste in the ladies as all the proof she needs, certainly does not think so.

As previously stated, Matty continued to attempt to woo Jenna back into his arms during Episode 13. Three weeks had gone by since the split, and unbeknownst to McKibben, things had only gotten hotter between Jenna and Collin. Funny enough, this reviewer is sort of feeling sorry for Collin since Season 3 kicked back up again. Awkward. is certainly doing a fantastic job of leaving out all of Collin’s awesome attributes in favor of keeping him quiet as Jenna’s make-out buddy. He’s polite enough, but we haven't witnessed any of the charms that drew Jenna to him in the first place since the show began the second part of this season. Matty has gotten plenty of emotionally vulnerable moments since Jenna shattered his heart into a million little pieces... Eh, when I put it like that, I guess Matty has earned a few episodes' worth of our complete attention. Jenna’s mom, Lacey (Nikki DeLoach) certainly would think so, as her “breakup” with Matty this week per Jenna’s request saw her sending her buddy off with a plate of homemade cookies.

Val (Desie Lydic), for sure, would agree, though it seems any young man with svelte figure and a pair of boardshorts would do. Val and Lacey would crash Jenna’s barbecue, covertly remaining on Team Matty while Collin awaited a true introduction to Jenna’s pals. Meanwhile, Tamara, Jake, and Ming planned to venture over to the barbecue fashionably late, if only to prove a point to Jenna that they refused to really give Collin the benefit of the doubt. Tamara, true to form, eventually let it slip that she’d been privy to the entire affair between Jenna and her new boo, leading Jake to storm out of her bedroom in a huff. Matty is Jake’s bestie. Jenna is Tamara’s bestie. Ming was just happy to get out of having to pretend to have fun in Jenna’s backyard. Fred Wu (Kelly Sry) did show up, though!

Devastated, and not realizing that a massive argument had gone down between Jakara, Jenna sent her friends a slew of nasty texts before slaying them verbally over the phone. Ming and Tamara decided that they’d had enough of Jenna’s fresh new attitude, claiming that she’d begun to change her personality along with her hair for Collin. See, I think I’m going to support Jenna on this one! I know we’re supposed to be upset with Hamilton at this point, but her girlfriends should have her back at least somewhat. I’m not suggesting that they should ignore their friend Matty or his feelings, but they planned on showing up late in any case! Ming certainly didn’t want to go at all. Episode 13 closed with Jenna deleting her former besties from her social networking account, solidifying the start of a new chapter in Hamilton history.

What did you think of Awkward. Season 3 Episode 13, “Taking Sides”? Are you loving Sadie’s new budding romance with Austin? Do you like the scenes of friendship between Matty and Sadie? Are you siding with Jenna or her friends? Team Collin or Team Matty? Are we about to start truly hating Jenna? Is Anne Hathaway Sexy?
