Avril Lavigne Responds to 'Hello Kitty' Criticism: 'RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!!'
Avril Lavigne is catching all kinds of fresh hell for the once-in-a-lifetime disaster known as the music video for her new single, "Hello Kitty". And now the Canadian pop-rocker is responding to all the criticism.
Long story short, she's getting called out for the video taking her depiction of Japanese culture in a racist direction, an argument that basically amounts to how Lavigne allegedly uses Asian culture to play dress-up. Not that Gwen Stefani ever caught this kind of hell over her obsession with Harajuku Girls, but then, 2004 was a different time, I suppose. We're now in the age of responded to accusations of racism with a hearty "LOLOLOL!!!" on social media.
For Lavigne, "Hello Kitty" is an homage: done for her Japanese fans, with her Japanese label, and featuring Japanese choreographers all working for a Japanese director in Japan. Of course, this still doesn't address anything about the relative quality of either the song or the video, but then, I suppose if every artist were self-aware about what they were doing, everyone would be Rebecca Black (she knew what she was doing, right? Right?). Check out Avril's response (on Twitter, because of course) below:
RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video…
