'Arrow' Writers, Please Consider Bringing Harley Quinn to Life

NetherRealm Studios - Injustice: Gods Among Us
I'm crazy about… Well hey, I'm just crazy.
The midseason finale of Season 2 of Arrow is set to air tonight on The CW, so I've had Starling City on the brain. Vampire Diaries star Steven McQueen has been heavily campaigning for the role of Nightwing on Arrow. I have to say, I admire his determination. Don’t get too excited about the littlest Gilbert suiting up and cycling into Starling City just yet. I’m pretty sure he drummed up the part on his own. Good for him! It’s one thing to audition for a part. It’s another thing altogether to have a vision of bringing a beloved character to life as a young actor. You sell it to the show’s production team, Steven. I don’t know what’s going on there, but I have my own plan. Here me out. Harley Quinn. Here me out!

In my opinion, The Joker has been laid to rest with Heath Ledger. I don’t want to see anybody else in the purple velvet suit, with the kinky green hair, and smudged makeup. That’s a wrap. Mr. J has been perfected, and I think we can all agree that we're done. The awful perennial Halloween costumes are bad enough. We love The Joker, though, and the most infamous of Batman villains has an opportunity to live on in D.C. live-action lore through his adorable protégé and perpetually failed love interest… Harley Quinn.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Harley, you should probably just quit reading. I’m not going to do anything to sell you on one of the greatest D.C. characters of all time. Do yourself a favor. Give Wikipedia a whirl. Click around, watch YouTube videos, scan some comics, etc. In a nutshell, Harley Quinn is a female counterpart of her devious love. She’s not nearly as maniacal or evil, but she’s just as dastardly and comical. She's the kind of chick who's not about to let her ego get in the way of a good punch line, you know? I’d stamp her as more of an antihero than anything, personally. If you don’t think Harley belongs anywhere near Ollie and Diggle, fine. If you don’t enjoy Harley Quinn in any capacity, might I ask what is wrong with you? Take a look:

Video no longer available.

See? Granted, she's mostly out of costume there. You get the vibe. Also, it’s important to note that D.C. Comics just gave a new Harley comic book series the green light.

I get it. This is Arrow, not Bat or Wing, but I have to assume that if Nightwing possibly exists, then Gotham probably exists. So what’s Harley Quinn doing? Playing with Hyenas and baking puddin’ pies? Eating a salad with Poison Ivy? Give her something to do! Here’s what this all amounts to. The idea of creating Gotham City is clearly being tossed around. That's not my doing. Nightwing is awesome all on his own, but the concept of having Nightwing trail Harley Quinn to Starling City has me sold. I don’t think it’s necessarily good form to introduce any sort of mega-sized superhero presence into the mix permanently on titular star Oliver Queen’s own show, but these two sort-of-sidekicks could be fantastic! This doesn’t need to be a permanent part. The Flash is here. He's great. The Flash is going. Perfect! The rest of us can’t, however, hope for our own CW spinoff series. I just think D.C. fans deserve the opportunity to see Harley brought to life on a live-action television show. That upcoming Superman-Batman flick isn’t going to take the leap of faith, and after that, I can’t imagine the superstars of Gotham making their way into anything living and breathing for a good, long while. Arrow writers, you’re our only hope. Imagine the possibility of the likes of Roy Harper and Felicity Smoak colliding with the lady-clown comic geeks have been waiting to crush on. I don’t think Laurel Lance would even be able to process Harley Quinn’s existence! Even better!

Steven McQueen, I don’t know what your plan is besides pumping iron and presenting yourself as a suitable Dick Grayson, but this could work. If the writers are on the cusp, use Harley.

Lastly, I have to present these gems of comedic gold from Injustice.

Everything is better with a little help from Harley, Ollie! I rest my case.
