Arrest Warrant Issued for Grammy Winner Anita Baker

Anita Baker has landed on the wrong side of the law: an arrest warrant has been issued for the Grammy-winning singer.

The bench warrant cites her for failure to appear at a creditor's examination last year as part of a lawsuit involving a painting and decorating company Baker allegedly stiffed out of over $15,000. Baker, 56, hired the company to work on her home in Grosse Point, Michigan.

Because this is the age we live in, Baker tweeted her response to news of the warrant, which broke on a TV news report she was watching:

"We're not trying to give her any hard time or anything unnecessary. We just would like to collect the money for my client," said attorney Daniel Gerow, who represents Ray Smith Painting and Decorating, the company that filed against Baker. "He's owed the money, and that could end it all right then."

Baker had been ordered to pay $15,351.41 in 2011 in a default judgement for the company's carpentry, plastering and painting work. So this issue could possibly disappear if Baker just pays what's owed. She recently released an album just last year titled Lately, so it's not as if she's retired or anything. At the very least, paying the balance would be cheaper than lawyer fees for an ongoing, protracted court battle. But if she's really strapped for cash, I don't see why we all can't go in together on a bid for her Grammy. We could even split up ownership, with some commenters getting it on all even-numbered Fridays, and others getting it on all odd-numbered Mondays, etc.

Come on, let's make it happen, guys.
