Animator Hayao Miyazaki Announces Retirement

The Oscar-winning Japanese director and animator will retire following the full release of his upcoming film, The Wind Rises. Koju Hoshino, the president of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli production company, made the bittersweet announcement Sunday at The Venice Film Festival.

Hayao Miyazaki, 72, is famous for his stunning works in animation, including Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. The announcement was said to have saddened members of the animation community, as well as fans of Miyazaki's highly acclaimed work.

Miyazaki's final film, The Wind Rises, will be released in North America by Disney Touchstone Pictures soon following its screening in Venice.
