America's Next Top Model - Cycle 20 Episode 5 - Recap and Results - The Girl Who Went Around In Circles

Sorry for the late update, folks, but baseball on The CW pushed America's Next Top Model one day back from its usual timeslot this week! As we continue cycle 20, we're given yet another treat by insane supermodel overlord Tyra Banks. The models are faced with a challenge not quite as wacky as the vertical runway, but similarly hilarious/terrifying (hilarious for us, terrifying for them). We get some more inter-model drama, and of course, we lose one more contestant!

Nina and Chris H. are best buds, but no one else seems to like him much at all. Chris H. is an overly dramatic brat when Mike rudely tells him to stop interrupting him. He's being a douche from his Tragic Back Story™ of having a bad home life in his youth, but that's not a great excuse. He calls a little house meeting to explain/apologize, but it's not enough for me. He's annoying and a jerk. The other models seem to forgive him, but they're still a bit wary.

Marvin Scott Jarrett, editor of Nylon Magazine, is selecting the winner of tonight's challenge, wherein the models must walk a spinning runway! Mike is such a bad walker that the judges decide they need to teach him before the challenge. Nina's got a bum foot from some recent injury and is nervous about having to walk the rotating runway. Instead of backing out or risking an injury, Nina has the medic wrap her ankle beforehand. Once everyone is all set, the challenge begins!

Cody does a good job walking, as does Don. Nina stumbles, but doesn't hurt herself. Jourdan friggin' nails it. Renee trips up at first but also does really well. everyone else manages without incident, then comes Mike. He's just... unremarkable. It's almost disappointing that nobody fell over or anything. Jourdan of course wins the challenge. As her prize, she'll get to appear on Nylon TV and also she gets to keep the outfit!

The photoshoot this week is "trailer park chic", and the models are choosing their own partners. The whole concept is that they're doing this high fashion shoot in an exaggerated hillbilly setting. Today's photographer is... The Cobra Snake? What? What in the world. That's not a name a human person can have. Names and theme aside, the shoot is really strange. Almost everyone seems to do a bad job! A lot of these models just don't take good pictures, maybe? You'd think, being models, they'd know what the heck they're doing. But I guess not!

The judges face Nina and Phil as the first pair from the shoot, and they love 'em. I have to agree! Jiana and Marvin are up next. They're good, but not quite; Marvin's face is the same and Jiana has no neck in the photo. Cory and Renee are third, with Cory getting universal praise but Renee not doing quite as well. The judges lambaste Mike but still give him high scores for some reason. Alexandra gets a lot of praise but only does one point better than Mike! This scoring system is totally nonsensical. Jourdan and Chris H. are kinda eh to the judges. I pretty much agree. Kanani get mixed scores. I loved her photo, but what do I know from modeling. Don gets great reviews, deservedly so. Jeremy gets dumped on in the scores, which is unfortunate. Even before final judging and elimination, it's apparent that Jeremy is not long for this show.

Best photo this week is Jourdan! Nina gets second place Bottom two end up being Jeremy and Mike, of course. By a very small margin, Jeremy stays and ice cream man Mike goes. Thank goodness. Mike was awful. There's a weird feature this cycle where eliminated models can get back in by having a good social media score. Check out the video below to see some details on Chlea's shoot, and check back next week for another recap!
