America's Next Top Model - Cycle 20 Episode 4 - Recap - The Guy Who Gets A Weave
It's makeover day on America's Next Top Model this week! The CW's model competition show from supermodel Tyra Banks has a fun gimmick this cycle of having half the competitors be men. The guys and girl both get makeovers, and despite not facing a challenge this episode, one person gets sent home!
So the episode opens with Tyra's Three Steps to Chemistry:
1. Fresh Breath
2. Tension
3. Inhale
The competitors are horrible at modeling, so they need tips, since today they'll be posing with judge Rob and Alessandra Ambrosia. Even with these tips, they uh... They don't do great. Phil and Jeremy do an S&M shoot with Alessandra where they eat milk off the floor with their hands?? It's kind of stupid. Marvin and Chlea do a similar photo, but on a bed. Mike does bad still, the poor guy. Everyone else is basically a non-entity, which is fine; the milk-off-the-floor thing was the best part anyhow.
Next is makeovers. I have very strong feelings about these makeovers. Most of them go blonde, but a few drove me nuts. A few raw reactions: NINA GETS RED HAIR LAYERED WITH BANGS AHHHHHHH. Kanani gets a Rihanna-style pixie cut. PHIL GOT A WEAVE HHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGHGHGHGHG WHAT
Also of note: Cory gets his head shaved clean and it makes him look like a sexy alien. He's super upset by it at first, but is very gracious once the judges talk to him about the decision. I think he'll do well in this competition because he has a very good attitude and is willing to roll with the punches a lot more than some of his competitors are.
The photoshoots were before the makeovers, which seems unfair, but the models get to look fabulous while the judges berate them, so I guess it's fine! Jourdan gets a high score from the judges, despite them criticizing her, hardcore. Renee gets two 7s and a 9. Chlea and Marvin both get trashed, which is fine because their picture sucked. Jiana and Chris get mixed reviews. Phil missed a chance to show his... booch? I don't know what that is, but it's a funny word. Maybe it's his butt?? Jeremy, Phil's photo partner, also got middling reviews. Don and Alex get mixed reviews. everyone, surprisingly, loves Mike's photo! He sucks and I hate him, but the judges loved him for some reason! UGH. Cory and Nina both are missing facial fierceness, but the judges give them high scores anyway.
Mike wins the week for some stupid reason even though he's awful. This guy is so bland in his personality and not at all trained as a model. Tyra found him in an ice cream truck and asked him to come be on the show. He's bad! I hope he gets kicked off soon. Don and Chlea are the bottom two, and Don is the one who stays. Gah. I hate this. I liked Chlea! Why couldn't Don or Mike lose? Chlea has an attitude and they just gave her a very expensive hairdo! Whatever.
The best quote this week is from Tyra to Phil, when he's told he's continuing in the competition: "We want to see that beautiful body, and your weave is fierce" I'll probably find a quote every week to include in my recap, because Tyra is always talking crazy.
Overall, this was a good episode, but the lack of a central challenge sort of killed the momentum. There wasn't as much flirting and smooching as in the previous episodes. I think next week will be better, since the makeovers are out of the way and we can get back to the flirtation! I love this show and I love writing about it and talking about it!
