America's Got Talent 9 Results for 08/27/2014 (Recap + Video)

Welcome to the live blog and recap of America's Got Talent 2014, "Semi Final Results 1" on Wednesday, August 27, 2014! Last night's show was a hit-or-miss affair, with some former frontrunners facing serious stumbling blocks en route to the finals. Meanwhile, other acts really stepped up to the plate and staked their claim on dark horse status (we're looking at you, Mara Justine!). Six acts will advance to the finals, with one of those six acts having earned a LIVE SAVE by America! So stay tuned to find out how you can save your favorite and put one of these 12 acts through to the finals!

As a reminder, here are the 12 performers vying for the 6 spots tonight:

Andrey Moraru
Aerial Animation
Bad Boys of Ballet
Dan Naturman
David & Leeman
Emily West
Flight Crew Jump Rope
Mara Justine
Miguel Dakota
Mike Super
Paul Ieti
Sons of Serendip

I've gone over it all day, and I'm actually switching my predictions around. The six I think will get through are Emily West, David & Leeman, Miguel Dakota, Sons of Serendip, Mara Justine, and Aerial Animation, although I'm iffy about whether Andrey Moraru or Mike Super might sneak in there. But I'm just not confident enough to predict them, so I'm sticking with those six.

But which six acts do you predict to advance? Are they the same as the six acts you WANT to advance? Let us know who your six are in the comments! And keep it locked right here, as I'll be updating with my live, running commentary!

Let's get this show on the road!

RECAP

-This is a change of pace, as we don't kick things off with a video package highlighting last night's show, nor do we get a bunch of platitudes from the contestants talking about what this means to them. We kick things off with a performance -- from musical guest Ariana Grande!

ARIANA GRANDE performs!

-Ariana sings "Break Free," and I actually kind of find it adorable that all of the girls in the crowd are singing along. I have no idea why though. Maybe it's because I don't really see that too often for female singers, as crowds always seem to sing along to guy acts.

-Ariana is wearing a shimmery black dress with cat ears, which makes me think she might have missed her calling starring on FOX's Gotham. (Okay, I don't really think that at all, but it wouldn't surprise me if she went full Catwoman in one of her videos one of these days. Once you're killing alien species with your rocket boobs, there's no turning back).

-This is actually an insanely catchy song, and Ariana's vocals are impeccable. Seriously, girlfriend is TALENTED. Would definitely listen to this again.

-And NOW we get the big recap video of last night, with backstage comments. Mara Justine is over-the-moon about the comments she received from the judges, while Paul Ieti breaks down behind-the-scenes after his performance, feeling he's blown his chance. Meanwhile, the lead dancer of Bad Boys of Ballet says that while Howard may have his opinions on some things, his opinion isn't word. Basically, she states that because he doesn't know dance, he pretty much lacks the right to criticize, which is kind of a lousy attitude to have. I don't know how to make my own movie, but I know Freddie Got Fingered was awful. In other snippets, Flight Crew Jump Rope (and the lead of Bad Boys of Ballet) are enamored with Sons of Serendip, saying, "It feels like they're singing to you." Emily West, meanwhile, says that this has been her dream, and she'd love to have the chance to continue to do this for a career.

-Nick explains how the Snapple Save will work, as America will vote between the 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishers in the voting. They have just thirty minutes to log their vote via Google...STARTING NOW! The three acts up for elimination are:

Aerial Animation
David & Leeman
Mara Justine

WTF?!?! Seriously, three of the six acts I predicted are in danger of going home! This is RIDICULOUS! If these three are on-the-bubble, then who the HELL are the top vote-getters?! This is going to be a crazy night before it's all said and done, although I'm assuming America saves one, and the judges save another.

-We break up the seriousness with the Reddi-Whip after party, but I'm so stunned by the results that I just can't with this right now. Onto the results...

RESULTS, PT. 1

-Nick calls Flight Crew Jump Rope, Bad Boys of Ballet, and Mike Super to the stage. All three are wild card acts, but only one will advance. Nick reads the results...

MIKE SUPER advances to the Finals!

FLIGHT CREW JUMP ROPE and BAD BOYS of BALLET are eliminated from AMERICA'S GOT TALENT 2014!

-Mike thanks Howie for believing in him, while Howie takes this as confirmation that he's an amazing judge. I like Mike Super a lot, and thought he did a great job last night, so even though I didn't predict him in my Top 6, I have absolutely no problem with this result.

HOWIE BECOMES USHER

-Back from break with another skit in which Howie puts on a disguise and goes undercover as a worker at Radio City Music Hall. Last time, he was working the ticket booth. Tonight, he's an usher. He makes prospective audience members do a lot of silly things to get to their seats, such as walk backwards, endure a bright flashlight being shined in their face, or finish a sandwich. He even causes an elderly couple to doubt that their tickets are for the right show, as he makes them think they have tickets to a puppet show. Once the audience has filed in, Howie reveals his identity by removing the fake hair and mustache, and I find myself wondering how any one could have possibly been fooled by such a flimsy disguise. That said, this was a cute segment, even if it did go on for what felt like a small eternity.

RESULTS, PT. 2

-Nick calls Andrey Moraru and Sons of Serendip to the stage. Only one act will go through...

SONS OF SERENDIP advance to the Finals!

ANDREY MORARU is eliminated from AMERICA'S GOT TALENT 2014!

-The guys are initially speechless, before finding the words to thank America, saying they never imagined this was possible when they first got together. Heidi congratulates the group, and wishes them the best of luck. However, she notes that she is sad to see Andrey go, saying that he's "a great act." No disagreement from me there. These are some wonky-ass results tonight though. There are three more acts, and my only guess is that it's going to be the other three singers: Emily, Miguel, and Paul. And if that's the case...meh. I like Paul, but there's no way he should still be in the running after last night, so if he gets a spot, I'm going to be pretty miffed.

-Back from break with Nick and Paul in the green room. He knows Paul is down, but lifts his spirit by throwing to a video package from a military base, as his fellow soldiers wish him luck and talk about how proud they are. Yeah, Paul is going through.

TALKING WITH THE JUDGES

-We then get another segment in which the judges take questions from viewers at home. A woman named Mary asks Howard about his morning routine, while a shirtless guy named Mike asks Heidi for advice on reeling in women like her. This earns him an X from Heidi, while Howie notes how strange it is that he opted out of wearing a shirt but decided to still wear a hat. We then get an appearance from PIERS MORGAN, who jokingly throws some shade at the judges. Howard sticks up for Howie by saying he's "talented and delightful." And...that's pretty much it. Not that I'm complaining. These bits are best kept short.

RESULTS, PT. 3

-Nick calls Emily West, Miguel Dakota, Paul Ieti, and Dan Naturman to the stage, but doesn't announce how many of these four acts are going through. I'd be absolutely stunned (STUNNED!) if it were only one.

EMILY WEST advances to the Finals!

However, Nick tells the other three acts not to move just yet, as there are more results to come. Emily gushes and thanks everyone, saying this is a dream come true. Howard reiterates that Emily is a million dollar act, and adds that there's not much advice he can give to a frontrunner. All he can say is "Don't let up" and "Kick it into high gear," as he hopes Emily doesn't hold back just because she's a frontrunner. Good advice.

RESULTS, PT. 4

-Nick then continues with the results, as we're down to Paul Ieti, Miguel Dakota, and Dan Naturman. Only one of these three will go through...

MIGUEL DAKOTA advances to the Finals!

PAUL IETI and DAN NATURMAN are eliminated from AMERICA'S GOT TALENT 2014!

In a cute moment, Dan is waiting for the results, getting ready to rush Miguel with a congratulatory hug. When his name is called, Dan leaps over and gives Miguel a big hug. For his part, Miguel is overwhelmed, and says what an honor it's been to be on the same stage as these other talented acts. Mel B congratulates Miguel for getting through, saying he's a total star. Eh, he's not my favorite singer in this competition, but I don't have any real problem with him making it through.

-Back from break with Nick telling us we can record and upload our auditions for next season online, as video auditions are NOW OPEN! Sounds way better than standing in a line. But enough about next season, as we've got a Snapple Save to get to!

RESULTS, PT. 5

-Nick brings the Snapple Save finalists back onstage, as Aerial Animation, Mara Justine, and David & Leeman await the results...

MARA JUSTINE advances to the Finals!

YES! YES! YES! She never should have been in danger in the first place. When her name is called, Mara practically falls to pieces with tears of joy, as if she's just won the entire show! She thanks America for voting for her, and Howard congratulates her. However, he does note that she's been on a wild emotional rollercoaster for just being 12-years-old. He worries about whether or not she can handle it, but she insists she's okay. I can't wait to see what she does next.

-And so this leaves us with Aerial Animation and David & Leeman, as the judges will now deliberate on which act will be the sixth and final act put through to the Finals from this first group of 12 semifinalists.

-Back from break with a list of the acts performing in next week's show:

AcroArmy
Emil and Dariel
Smoothini
Blue Journey
Kelli Glover
Baila Conmigo
Wendy Liebman (WILD CARD ACT!)
Jaycob Curlee
Mat Franco
Quintavious Johnson
Jonah Smith
Christian Stoinev

That's a pretty stacked lineup, actually. Can't wait.

FINAL RESULT

-The judges have deliberated, and it's time to find out which act will go through to the finals.

Heidi Klum votes for David & Leeman
Howie votes for David & Leeman
Howard Stern votes for David & Leeman

DAVID & LEEMAN advance to the Finals!

AERIAL ANIMATION is eliminated from AMERICA'S GOT TALENT 2014!

Eh, I like David & Leeman, but between these two acts, I think the judges made the wrong choice. Of course, we still have Blue Journey to fill our "interpretive dance against a video screen" needs. So I'll be interested to see what they come up with next week, particularly now that they're the only act of their kind remaining in the competition.

-To recap, the six acts going through to the Finals are...

Mike Super
Sons of Serendip
Emily West
Miguel Dakota
Mara Justine (America's Save)
David & Leeman (Judges' Save)

So what do you think of these results? Did the right acts go through? If not, whom would you have liked to see go through? Sound off in the comments! And don't forget to join us next week for the continuation of the live Semi Finals, as the remaining 12 acts compete for the final six spots in the Top 12! Thanks for hanging out tonight!

GOODNIGHT!
